As a followup, unlike a light bulb that consumes a bit of tungsten during use, the diode laser does NOT "eat itself" over time.

The glass optics do not age, or rather age so slowly that they would practically outlive you before needing replacement.

They DO build up a film based upon environment.

If you want to make your Xbox DVD reader last, put it in a DRY environment with no change in humidity. Then you'll notice that CD's and DVD reader/writers will last far longer.

In so called "worn out" units I've taken apart this is completely fogged over.

YES it can be cleaned but doing so means that you'll destroy the assembly.

A nice new assembly has no such material.

That actually made quite alot of sense...

So what saying is that i have no chance of getting it to work again?

cool.gif the lifespan of the laser should not degrade to the point at which the read head will misinterprete signals after only couple of years heavy use - it should last much longer than this- as proven by your van. Furthermore, the voltage of a diode laser is irrelevant since they are driven by current, not voltage.

I'm not saying your wrong really, i just wanted to add something to your electronics rant!  biggrin.gif

I just thought I would reply because I have just handed in a dissertation on exactly this... smile.gif

Not that any of this matters though...  jester.gif

p.s. is there any chance you could shed any light on this could you?

Any help would be really appriciated...

I dont want to argue, but laser aging does affect the light optical power output of a diode laser cavity. Therefore on a communications llink (particularly a long haul one) the laser aging affect must be corrected. I have no idea whether the xbox drives have laser aging correction (though I would suspect they do) but the point remains, if the laser is used continually the optical output power will degrade over time and may cause read errors. This is pretty much irrelevant though because a) I imagine they have laser aging correction built in. Yup there is truth in this, but for all intents and purposes it doesn't apply to the low current light duty cycle of the CD/DVD drives.

Communications lasers are a different beast altogether and compensation for changes is a BIG deal.

The Xbox DVD/CD (or any DVD/CD) has to support multiple media color frequencies, so there is wide leeway in the tolerances... that is except for the Xbox's original Thompson drives which did not work very well with certain color media.

Yes of course... the only thing is that here where i live it costs about as much to replace the reader as it costs to buy a new unmodded Crystal Edition Xbox... i think its about $230
Of course i wont have a modded box anymore but now i will have a warranty in case this should happend again... Damn its hard to decide...   unsure.gif

Check ebay.

You should be able to find a replacement drive for much less.

Also there are pleanty of people here who have their own shops that also sell replacement drives at very reasonable costs, all things considered!

Worst case you CAN adapt a DVD reader but it would (for the most part) no longer be able to read originals.

Im not very good with technical stuff... is it just to plug in the new drive and thats it? (i know i gotta open it and stuff like that)
Also unfortunatley im not allowed to buy items off the internet... the cheapest drive i can get is about 500kr[$65] (cheaper than a new Xbox...)  unsure.gif

Pretty much that's all you need to do.

Remove the old one and plug the new one in it's place.

The proceedure is well documented in the tutorials.

since you are going to probably need a new drive anyway, and your old drive dosn't work, go ahead and try "tweeking" the pots on the unit.

Regardless of weather this increases laser power, or it adjusts the relative noise rejection of the pickup, I have been able to get drives reading again, that had stoped working.

Move it in tiny increments and test it as you go...

While I normally don't advocate the pot tweak, when you have an otherwise dying device, there is certainly nothing to loose!

So as he said, give it a try!

It's unlikely that things will get much worst.

I found a store here that could sell me one but it is a modified samsung pc-dvd reader could there be any issues with it? and my friend told me that it would last alot better than any xbox reader due to the fact that it once was a PC reader, could there be some truth to this?
