Bandwidth Requirements For Hosting
« on: November 19, 2005, 10:51:00 PM »

how much bandwidth do i need to host alot of people in halo 2. as soon as i host 6 people there is so much lag. i have a 3 mb cable connection is get 350 kb/s downstream  :) but only 40 kb/s upstream. how much do i need i could siwcth to dsl with in my area at best gets 90 kb/s upstream but i have tosacrifice my downstream at at onyl 180 kb/s per second. i use way more download than upload so it isn't a good sacrifice. so let's say how much upload bandwidth would be required for a good game of halo 2 with 16 people no lag.

How big game you can host differes from game to game based upon how much data each game generates.

You can calculate how big game you can host by using this formula:

Scenario: Hosting a low bandwidth (2kb) requiring game with 5 users.

Bandwidth upload: Users x kb x (users - 1*)

Upload: 5 Users x 2 kb x (5 users - 1*) = 40 kb.

Why?

User 1 = Data from 2, 3, 4, 5 = 8 kb.
User 2 = Data from 1, 3, 4, 5 = 8 kb.
User 3 = Data from 1, 2, 4, 5 = 8 kb.
User 4 = Data from 1, 2, 3, 5 = 8 kb.
User 5 = Data from 1, 2, 3, 4 = 8 kb.

8 kb x 5 = 40 kb.

*You don't upload the data from an user back to himself.

Download is simply (users - 1**) x kb

As (5 Users - 1**) x 2 kb = 10 kb.

**You don't download your own data.

Systemlink games

View the "Bandwidth - High" and "Bandwidth - Low".

Low is anything from 1 kb/s to 7-8 kb/s.
High is all above.

Halo2 is high.

Calculate with 10 kb/s per user in Halo2.

then that is my problem i only geet like 40 kb/s per second so once i hhost 5 or 6 people the get lagged out. looks like i cant host alot of people  :( to host 16 people i would need like 160 + kb/s per second upload that would cost way to much where i live since they haven't upgraded the standard DOCSIS 1.1 to 2.0 Yet. dam this thread can be closed
