Now this is the weird problem, I can see the rooms however when I add someone as a 'friend' it always tells me the are offline (even though I can see them in a room).

Your friend has to add you this his/her contact list as well, to see each other as 'Online'.

Second problem, If I put GR2 (an original disk) into my chipped machine it finds the game and I can play no problem. However if I put Splinter Cell in (a backup) it tells me there are no games... even though there are people in the room.

Original discs and legal backups work in Kai. Either no-one was hosting Pandora Tomorrow when u were searching for a game, or you have one of these dodgy beta versions (i'm not accusing anyone of anything and i apologise if i offended u by stating that).
anyways, ask the person in the arena if he/she is hosting, otherwise host a game and ppl will join.
