Permanent Ban On Certain Offensive Names
« on: March 31, 2004, 10:58:00 AM »

Hey guys,

I was in KAI just now and came across a dude with 'hitler' as xtag. No maybe I'm just being sensitive, but I feel that names like that should just be banned immediately. Or maybe a filter on the xtag registration form that names like 'hitler' can't be chosen (but they would find a way, no doubt, to circumpass that).

Just trying to get a discussion going, interested how you feel about this.

I agree with you to a point.

hasent one of your clan got a tag of [SaD]Bastard

wouldnt also someone be offended if there was a name

GiveGoodHead

or

CumOfSumYungBoy

what is considered offensive and what is considered amusing?

do we want a community that is based on freedom or on rules?

laugh.gif You got me on that bastard thing!  laugh.gif

But I get what you're saying... Of course freedom is an important point and not one to be neglected. But when I'm talking about offensive names, I'm mean names which have to do with the really nasty stuff. Like Hitler, Osama, Bush ( wink.gif ), al'quaida, 9-11 and stuff like that. Stuff that relates to human tragedies.

It's like you say, where is the line between fun and offending? But when you see a name, you'll know...

I know, I feel the same way.

I see the name [SaD]Bastard and it makes me smile.

I see the name hitler and it makes me feel angry.

Other people may see it completly different

I had a user sign up on my TopSpin ladder with the name "MotherFucker" I asked them to change the name or I would have to remove it.

If hitler had signed up to it, i would have probably have chosen to leave it unless i received complaints.

another good point is getting all the different ways you can spell a name.

eg. hit13r, H1tler, H17L3R, Hitler!!!11!!

also there is no way of controlling what people call there ingame profiles.

@mike, good point unfortionatly user names are in the chat room part of it, that has nothing to do with the users xbox. the only way to stop it is at the source (Xlink server database).

At some point we are going discuss how xlink will be moderated atm we are concentrating on getting the software up and running.

Hitler is a good kid.  Not a trouble maker at all.  He changed his name because of peer pressure so, don't use him as an example.  Besides, there are people in the world with the last name Hitler.  What do you propose?   I know what your point is, but what is offensive to one person may not be perceived the same way by another.
You can't regulate without pissing people off either.

Just my opinion wink.gif

Well he probably changed his name because he is a "good kid"

he probably had his own reasons for selecting the name in the first place.

could be that he wanted to shock people.

or it could reflect his political stance.

Should we ban political and religious xtags as well.

would an xtag

Pray2God offend a Athiest?

would a xtag

Jesus be conidered Blasphmy? (even if it is there real name)

would the xtag

WitchFinderGeneral be offensive to Witches (btw. I know a lot of Witches)

Im not saying that any xtags should be changed, but event the simplest phrase may cause offence to someone.

Should we have to tip-toe and talk softley just incase we inadvertantly offend someone?

I think we should all consider that not everyone is a English Speaking White Christian Hetrosexual.

Im not trying to cause conflict but i would also like to see what your thoughts are on the subject.

I'd have to agree with boxorox on this one, in contrast to my primary post, banning xtags will not solve the problem. Someone could have an xtag 'iloveallpeopleworldpeaceismygoalletsallmakelove' and have an in game ID which says 'iblowupjewsinisrael'...
The ability as a server to boot people from your game would come in nice.

And boxorox, if we're talking about banning the people, not the xtags, what about something which monitors people's IP or DNS? So you can actually, instead of booting the xtag, boot the PC of that person... I know it's not flawless, but it is a step in (the right?) direction. It could also solve problems with people who hacked/cheat the game.. Although of course, that is a different discussion.

I know ill be kicking people when the game allows, if their name doesn't meet my NO Curseword standards.

Shocking names are one thing, but intentional disregard of how others might interpret your nick is another!

My 2 Cents

i know this will never happen but...

... you know shopping centres circulate info about shoplifters.

how about a partnership with XBC regarding users that are banned for unsocial behaviour.

If they get banned on XBC they will only come and cause trouble on XLink and vice versa.

I don't think you should ban for names, no matter what the names would be.  That is just silly, people get offended way too easy.  If someone had the name "UberJim sucks, and people with Irish last names are asses, also Hitler is the coolest", I would say "Wow, that's a stupid name".  I wouldn't get offended and want a ban.

Im not saying anyone should be banned, I just think that people should think of others and keep their names appropriate.
A user could choose any nick because it is their choice, but it is also my choice to kick or ignore any user for any reason.
To me something like hitler, ossama, or "Bush" may bug me, but that is most likely the reason they chose the nick.
When someone uses F***Y** as their nick, that is just plain being an A**.

So people come up with something creative!
(Nicks like $#i+ may be creative but all that proves is you are a wannabe H4x0r)

We can ban MAC addresses in final release (obviously not everyone), so that makes them useless...
