Testing A Dedicated R6 Server, Need Feedback
« on: January 29, 2004, 06:23:00 AM »

Me and a friend are trying to setup a permanent R6 dedicated server on a 8/1Mbit ADSL connection. At this moment we want to know about bandwidth usage so we can finetune some things. Also another thing to test is the CPU load on our 'Xlink server'.
So we invite you all to play some R6 so we can monitor some things.

The server's nick is 'TRUE-is|Dedicated'. Please post a comment about lag etc. if you have spend some time playing on our server.

Thnx in advance,

Froggie (Xtag: froggie) and Liquid (Xtag: liquidh2o)  <

i want to say that i think it runs out of maps after the rotation, maybe i am wrong, but i dont think you can just leave it up 24/7...i tried this before and ran into that problem.  <

We've been calculating a bit, and found that the maplist can hold 32maps max. Maximum amount of games on a map is 30. Say an avarage gametime of 120 seconds per game + 10 seconds lobbytime gives the following calculation:

32 x 30 x (120 + 10) = 124800 seconds of time = 34,6 hours of straight gaming time before the maplist runs out.
But I don't think the server will be used 24/7 by games so it will sit a few hours a day doing nothing. Besides that, the server is located in the room next to mine so I can reset the maplist once in a while if it runs out. That is IF the maplist is not in a loop. So that's not our first concern.
But it's good to mention though!

[edit]
I've seen some people join the server and then left after they saw there was nobody there. Keep in mind there always has to be a first player, so please wait patiently till there are more players dropping in.
Thnx!

First off, it's a great thing you are trying to do.  Excellent connections are hard to come by.  How many players is the game set up for? Or how many do you think you can accomodate?
Give it some time I believe the busiest time is about 6-7 hours from now.  <

i stopped after that cuz it was very frustrating... hope you continue tho, its a very nice gesture.  <

The server is currently setup for 8 people. After monitoring the traffic and if there's not too much complain about lag we'll see how it goes with 10, 12 or 14 people.
I'm currently installing another pc so I can shutdown my rig and see if it's possible to run Xlink on a PII CPU (it's currently running on a [email protected], but since it's almost near my bed I have a hard time sleeping while it's on ;)). We'll see how it goes from there.

[edit]
If you experience any problems connecting to the server, please post is. Currently I can't check if the server is up and I have my doupts.

Moved the 'Xlink server' to my PII 300 running Windows 2000. As for now I'm more worried about the CPU load then the bandwidth since it seems to hit the 100% load pretty often. Xlink sometimes just seem to hang at 100% while doing not very much.
I also noticed that people who have not installed the update for RC2 seem to have a hard time connecting. Maybe Team Xlink can clear something up about this whether this update is required or not.  <

although its not required, i recommend it for everyone, as it does clear up some connectivity issues with new users.   <

After the first test didn't go that well we're up and running for a second night. Moved the 'Xlink server' to a Duron 1200 and all seems to run smooth. Seems like the CPU is important for succes if you want to play with more then 4 people. The server will stay up and running all night, so enjoy a lag free game of R6 if you want   <

I like this - maybe we should make a sub arena of Rainbow Six 3 in Kai - specifially for dediacated hosts with good bandwidth? I could also give you right in that arena so you could control "message of the day" etc.

Let me know if you need anything

Would be cool to manage something like that.

Maybe it's already requested for Kai, but I think that an option for the roomcreator to post a small peace of text in the room, like a MoD, or some info about the server would be very appreciated. Just like 'real' gameservers have.  <
