whats the deal with xbox lan parties? Are people allowed to charge people to play, like a net cafe charges people to play pc game?

on the cd it states that "pay for play" is unauthorised.

whats the deal?

I play alot of LAN Xbox. I play some clan shit and some for fun. Generally the Clan games we pay an enterance to and there's prizes.

As far as other stuff, we go to a lot of "formal" team lan parties that have no prizes. Generally our team will pay 15 bucks to play since someone else is supplying the place to play and equipment. If we bring extra controllers, Xboxs, copies of the game, or TVs then it's a cut rate.

We also play 8-12 man team CTF between my and my landlord's apartment. We never charge, but most people do bring extra beer :)

No one really makes any money out of doing this. Charges in Clan games go towards prizes for the winners. Charges in non clan games are minor and ussually just to make up for someones place being used, soda drank, toilet paper used, electricity, dogs shaved (Hey weird shit happens sometimes)

Mainly it's about a bunch of guys getting together and playing and the money is merely a small thank you to those supplying equipment and places to play.

Charging people to play lan games only works if you know people that want to play games AND are willing to pay.  I dunno about where you live, but here an idea like that would never fly.  Last time I saw something that drew out a lot of geeks, it was an AMD giveaway a few years ago.  It was held outside, but in the wee hours of the morning so the geeks wouldn't melt in the sun.   B)

There is a comic book shop/gaming shop where I live that has pc's set up in the back for people to play LAN games on.  They charge, but its for the time and the network.  I don't know if anyone around here has an Xbox cafe thing going yet, although I saw on TV where dance clubs have gaming lounges now with Xbox's and PS2's set up in the club.
