2 Network Card Setup Using Ics
« on: September 11, 2003, 04:25:00 PM »

Ok, here's the dilly. I ran into this problem with a friends xbox.  Hope the info helps others that might be having the same problem. (and clues the "help" to remember this issue)

2 NIC Xlink-Bo-xlink setup with XP ICS running.

Requirements:
1 Network adapter connected to the internet.
1 Network adapter connected to your xbox (via crossover cable or normal cable with a hub/swtch)
1 Xlink messenger download
1 bo-xlink download.

Step 1. Enable the UDP ports 34518, 34519 in the ICS settings.
You have to add these manually. No big deal there. Just name them xlink1 and xlink2

If you can join rooms but after launch.. the box wouldnt see any other games in progress or If creating a game and no one would ever join go to step 2:

Step 2: You set up XLINK to run on the external adapter. Change your xlink settings to use the internal adapter  AND make sure you open the ports xlink needs on the adapter connected to the internet (in the ICS settings) as noted in Step 1.

I highly recommend the xlink team update the config wizard to tell the user having the problem to make sure xlink is using the INTERNAL adapter when the user has this configuration.

Thanks to flat235 for helping out my friend(Kaotic) the best you could... this was his problem. (i had to scratch my head a few times to figure this one out because it isnt obvious).

The help on the site is being fixed up right now by dfunked - should be much better..

However, i'm confused by what was happening there.. if there was just one pc, with 2 nics, theres absolutely no need for ICS .. U see, the xbox doesnt actually need internet access for xlink or bo-xlink..

All that needs to happen, in a nutshell, is xlink.exe has to be running somewhere where it will receive 34518/9 from the internet.. and the xbox just has to be able to talk to the same PC over a NIC..

The only time u would need ICS installed is if you wanted to run xbox apps which need the internet - such as avalaunch or xbox-live!

In that scenario, you would run ICS on the PC - but you wouldnt forward anything.. 34518/9 will have to arrive at the PC - not the xbox - and live! etc. will sort itself out using UPD holing...

Lemme know if ive missed the point here smile.gif

You arent forwarding the ports to the xbox.  you are forwarding the ports to the nic on the internal network (ie.. 192.168.1.1) I should have specified that in the first post.

if using ICS, xlink needs to use the internal adapter and ICS needs both ports opened and forwarded to the internal nic ip address.

internal adapter = network card using the internal address,  the one used to connect to the xbox.

Most people do use routers, i do too.

But my friend doesnt.   he is using two network cards.  one network card is for connecting to the internet, the other for the xbox.

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is used in this instance.

xlink needs to be set up to use the network adapter connecting to the xbox.

The ports( UDP 34518-34519) in ICS need to be opened and directed to the adapter connecting to the xbox and not the adapter connecting to the internet.

sounds simple enough and it is.  But if you choose the wrong network card in xlink from the start...troubleshooting might take a while until you eliminated everything and ask "what card is xlink using".

Just thought I would try to get others using this type setup (2 nics and ICS) started on the right foot from the start.  I didnt mean to confuse anyone.

np kaotic. we'll do the hdd when you get  it.

flat235, you have to keep in mind ICS is a simple firewall.   its that invisiable line between the two network cards allowing one to be private network and one to be public internet ip's.

If you tell xlink to operate on the the network card using an internet ip, it will never be able to connect to 192.168.x.x because its a private address and not available for use on the internet.

if you tell xlink to operate on the internal ip address (network card) you need to open the ports in ICS to allow the communication to the network card with the internet ip.   just like you would on a router.

True, both network cards are on the same pc... should the communication between the network cards and ip addresses be treated as the same?  No, there has to be specific boundries and ICS sets these boundries for the two networks.  Telling xlink to use the network adapter with the internet ip is telling it to look for your xbox on the internet with a private (192.x.x.x.) ip address and thats just not going to work.

why the chat, room user listing worked but the games didnt? i dunno.  im tired of trying to figure it out....all i know is it works the way i mentioned and it wouldnt work any other way.

like kaotic and myself said, thanks for your help.

(you can delete this thread before someone else gets confused)

for ics is it a program?
or do i change the udp in the sharing settings, i went to the external nic, pressed properties, advanced, settings, and then i added xlink and xlink2, so that udp port 34518 and 34519. and i am wondering wat the ip should be? 192.168.0.1?? or my xbox's ip?
