Changing Hd Serial Number
« on: May 15, 2007, 05:22:00 PM »

Has anyone thought of changing the serial number of the new drive to match the stock/married drive?  I am not a super giniuse, but I was able to discover that it should be possible using the ATA commands (see www.t13.org).

It would appear that the "Device Configuration Set" command can change the returned value of the "Identify Device" command, with is likely the command Live is using to determin the HD's serial number (presuming it is not using the super insecure volume ID).

The following link (look at section 7.10.5) gives some info on the "Device Configuration Set" command.  Looks rather prommising.

Anyway, maybe someone smarter than me can either figure this out, or tell me it is impossible.

Interesting theory but I don't believe you can just change a hard drive's serial number like that depressingly I want to say it's "etched" into it - at least for XBOX applications.

http://www.codeproje...ge_drive_sn.asp

shows you step by step how to do it on Windows, I haven't the foggiest how you'd apply that to xbox

I think that any platform specific how tos are likely refering to the volume serial number (the one you have linked to is indeed the volume serial number).  That number is reset every time the drive is formated, and is easly changed.

I think that what I am hoping is possible is similar to flashing the firmware on the 360s DVD drive.  Someone who regularly works with the ATA commands, like "The Specialist" or "Comidor Forever", could likely answer this off the top of their head.
