OK I have just installed a D-link DGL-4100 router and can to connect to XBL when xbox ip is set to auto but when try to make it a static ip it will not connect.

On gaming of router i have set xbl as a rule the ip it shows is not my xbox but my pc.
also have put my box in the dmz zone of router with ip of xbox.

why can't I set it up manually?  what steps  need to be taken

  thanx in advance  stillen

What I am asking is what is a good way to hook a router up and have XBL run as smoothly as possible.

  Thanx and regards  stillen

You're probably just not specifying everything necessary on the xbox for it to connect manually

give it an IP and exclude that from the DHCP pool of the router for example

Router: 192.168.1.100 / 255.255.255.0
On xbox set it at: 192.168.1.101 / 255.255.255.0 / DNS: 192.168.1.100

On router start the DHCP at x.x.x.102 smile.gif

OK thanx on my Dlink it has a Static DHCp table so that it still uses DHCP to hand out  addresses but they are kept the same I used this last night worked OK but still looking for better ways.

What about secondary DNs on the Xbox.

  > How do I change DHCP so that starts  above the a IP set so that it will work  right.

    thanx  stllen

OK since you mentioned no other method I assume this is the preferred way to set it up.

The DNS of the XBox needs to be same as the routers address then

DHCP address range  starts at 100 goes to 199 (addreses within the LAN)

So I need to change it to   200-199   is this correct?

Or do  I change DHCP at the LAN settings where it has just my IP address and subnet mask  change it to 192.168.0.102

MuffinMan so what I need to do is change my DHCP address range from 100-199   to 105-199.

Then I can configure my xbox liike you said in previous post then that gives me enough room to add a 360 later when I purchase on on another PC or notebook.
Also you did give a secondary DNS server # is that needed or only the primary,

Is this corrent if not plz expound on what  details need to be cleaned up so to speak. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

Hey stillen apologies for the delay smile.gif

I'm a linksys person so I'll try my best at describing what needs to be done.

First off, you shouldn't need to put in a secondary DNS server on the xbox, the router's IP should be just fine on its own.

Secondly, with the DHCP pool of addys, you should see somewhere on the settings of the router to specify the actual pool of addresses it pulls from. or it may just ask for the number of addresses and the starting number.

So you may see:

Starting IP:
Number of Addresses:

On my linksys it's specify the actual range.

Let me know if that helps you at all, it should be near where you choose whether it does static or dynamic IP's

Actually, if you have your assign your xbox's ip manually, you have to include the ip, subnet, gateway, and DNS. If you don't put in the DNS server, you will still be able to see everything within your network, but not outside of it, basically anything on the internet. This includes the xbox live servers.  The DNS has to be the address that your ISP assigns you. If you use dhcp, the router will forward the information on to the xbox. If you want to static assign it, pull the DNS servers off your computer. Open the command prompt and type "ipconfig /all".

If your router supports static dhcp, just set your xbox to receive dhcp and use the MAC address of the xbox to link with a specific IP. This should be within your DHCP pool. If your router's DHCP pool starts at 192.168.1.100/255.255.255.0 , set it to 192.168.1.150 or something.

OK I had tried it and it did not work     appreciate the help Muffinman

My router does have Static DHCP I do have that set in for my  Xbox and PC  except I just used the address that my router gave my Xbox and put that in the static DHCP field.

 That address was 192.168.0.5
I changed my LAN server field from 100-199  to 105-199

so I will go back and  and change my Xbox address to 192.168.0.5  and make the same change to my router Static  DHCP  field .

   thanx again   stillen

For a wireless xbox?

Wireless Ethernet Bridge is what you need

or if it's a 360 snag the OEM one used (that's what i did)
