aight so I got banned a little while back for upgrading my hdd, back in about januaryish. I knew that in order to get unbanned, I needed a new hard drive and eeprom. So, I bought a 160gb WD and new eeprom, and I'm awaiting a dvd drive to flash the new eeprom (I have to build the hdd from scratch using aid/slayers which is why I need a dvd drive) SO, I just read that instead of a nice new 160gb which I planned to use on xbl, I instead need a stock, 8gb hdd instead of just any-ol' hdd. Is this true? I really hope it isn't cauz I am not using a shitt 8gb hdd for all my games/movies and I really dont plan to make a dual-hdd setup, and in no way does my budget allow me to buy another xbox just for live. So pretty much, do I have to have a stock hdd to get unbanned, or will my 160gb hard drive work for being unbanned? I read around in the pinned topics but couldn't find anything saying that I HAD to have a stock hdd to become unbanned. Just trying to clear things up, thanx guys

BTW, if it helps, I was banned first with my maxtor 200gb, then switched to a 160gb WD hdd and let me play for a couple days, then got banend again.

Well you dont need a stock hdd but you need a new gamertag. Since you got banned before that flagged your gamertag. Meaning that everytime that you log into live with that tag xbl scans your hdd to see if its stock. That is the reason that your second hdd got banned, they scanned it saw it was bigger and banned you for it. So you have a few choices.
1. New Gamertag + New Live Virgin Eeprom + any sized HDD = Live
or
2. Old Gamertag + New Live Virgin Eeprom + stock sized HDD= Live
Since you have a new large Hdd I would suggest just getting a new GT and eeprom.

Ive got a lot of people on my friends-list and don't want to lose them, but I also don't want to have to run a dual-hdd setup. Argh, I guess I have to make a decision

btw, I already have an eeprom and hdd, so its either new hdd or new gamertag. >.<

Hey wait a minute....Just yesterday I had a 120G and an 80G WD hooked up inside of two different Boxes and they worked pretty good while online with XBL. Unfortunateley the 80G machine got banned and I unbanned it by zeroing the entire HDD(wrote 0's to the whole drive). After that I then edited the REPLACEMENT eeprom I had way back when and then VOILA! Once again though it got banned in 1 day. I hope this helps in the frenzy of figuring out the marriage theory. I really don't believe that you'd need a new HDD, just trick the system into thinking that it's new by wiping the drive clean.

Now I'm trying again by installing EVERYTHING on "F" partition and install the latest M$ dash on the "C" partition. This should work considering the above. It's called "preventive measures" that will keep you from getting banned in the future. Only one other thing that buggs me is, if you happen to have an upgraded HDD. Whos to say that it will not get you banned again and again etc....And last but not least, lets say that M$ is indeed checking the EEPROM info. This is how they are getting the size of your HDD which is located in a text file inside of the eeprom. Mostlikely we are unable to use large Hdd because of this. Unless we can get into the file ourselves and edit the HDD info. We may not be able to have a large drive anymore.

Someone out there has the real answer along with a tut that will set us all straight. God knows that we spend tons on M$ products alone and this is the thanks we get in return.

thats not the issue ^ The issue is that I got banned when I had a stock hdd installed, thus I need a stock hard drive to become unbanned

It doesn't matter if it was stock or not. You just need the info on that stock drive for matching with your newly installed eeprom though.

Zero formatting the HDD is not sufficient. The ESN (Electronic Serial Number) is unique to the HDD and is stored on a chip on the drive board. It is that ESN that is paired with the eeprom.
New HDD and New Virgin Eeprom is needed
