Banned.. But Why?
« on: May 24, 2006, 09:01:00 PM »

I have a Xbox with a WD 80gb hd in it, just got a two month trial of live and loaded up Halo 2. I got an error message saying "Live could not be found", most likely to a bad eeprom I was using. I swapped it out with a good one, and it worked without a problem (of course with my chip off).

The next day I got banned saying it detected that my box was modified. So I swapped my 80gb with my old stock drive, rebuilt it with Slayer's CD and put on a fresh eeprom. Booted up and Live worked without a problem again.

However I get banned again. Why is this? Is my gamertag flagged or what? I would like to play Live again, but this whole banning thing is getting old. Anyone know what I could do to fix this? Thanks.

From what I can tell, the 80G WD drive was married to the bad EEPROM the first time you tried to log onto XBL. When you switched the EEPROM afterward, you caused the marriage to change, and got the system banned from XBL.

As for the swapping back to the original drive, I have a question for you. Were you ever on XBL before you upgraded to the 80G WD drive. If you were, you broke the marriage again when you got the fresh EEPROM and matched it to the original drive, instead of using the original EEPROM that was married to the drive.

The solution:

Unfortunately, both of your HD's are now flagged as unmarried, so you have to get another new drive.  grr.gif
Money goes out the window when things go wrong. You also need a new fresh EEPROM to marry to the new drive, because all of you current EEPROM files are flagged.

GL to you in the future, and I truely hope you get on XBL again soon.

Thanks for the reply MegaHurt. I figured that both those hd's were now unusable.

And more than likely I did go on Live with that 80 gigger a long time ago. I think I was banned with that one when H2 first came out and ended up swapping that hd for another.

I was all out of eeprom's, and the gf wanted to play H2. So I broke down and bought another box. It's been working fine. Decided to use a new gamertag as well just in case that one was flagged. I don't mind wasting hd's (just 'barrow' them from work) but I can't afford to keep wasting Xbox's.

Thanks again.

if you can "borrow" as you put it hd's from work, then a new eeprom will only run you 10 bucks from zodiak in the b/s/t.  much cheaper than new box.  new hd + eeprom from zodiak = live access without worry.
