Xbox Live Account Recovery From Hd ?
« on: April 10, 2006, 03:50:00 PM »

I've done a bit of reading and it seems the XBox live accounts are stored in the FATx table of the hard drive.  I haven't seen anything though that mentions anyway to extract that information.  Here is the problem.

I did a modchip/hd upgrade for a customer.  No biggie, done lots of them.  Copied over all their saved games, setup the dash, everything.  Now they had two XBox live accounts-1 that just expired and a new one they made but I didn't know which one was good at the time, so I copied them over 1 by 1 with my memory card to the new hard drive.  Now to prevent getting banned on live with a new hard drive, I flashed a new eeprom to his box from one of my many softmodded ones.  He took his box home and called me right away and said all his save games we corrupted and his XBox live accounts weren't there.  I told him I still had his stock HD, so I would just reinstall that for a minute, copy off the games/live accounts again and put them on his new hard drive again.  So he brings over his XBox, I check the MS dashboard and sure enough, no live accounts and all his saved games appeared corrupted.  I plugged in his stock HD and ftp'd all his saved games over.  I then locked it and went to the MS Dash and there was no XBox live accounts there at all???  I still had one on the memory card, (of course this is the expired one, not the one they needed)  All the saved games retransfered back over ok, but for some reason the XBox live accounts are gone.

Now the only reason I can think of, is because I reflashed the eeprom to a new one, and now the live accounts don't think they are on the same box they were initially installed on and so they won't show up in the XBox live menu, but they are still in fact there.  Now, of course this is one of the only times that I didn't back up the original eeprom before I flashed it.  Of course I deleted Config Magic from the drive to make sure that he never ran that program and screwed his box up.  XBox is giving them a hard time over doing the account recovery, so I am trying to see if there is a way to recover the account from the hard drive at all?

AFAIK theres no way to do a raw extraction of the Live account, and if there was i doubt youd be able to plant it in another HD

what you can do is use Account Recovery though the MS dash
