i think the dash is automatically updated to 5960 when connected to xbox live. however, i have a similar, but different question so i will try posting it here and hopefully someone can confirm for both of us...

i have an xbox that is completely stock/unopened/unmodded, but that does not have dash 5960 on the hd yet. would that mean it was never updated on xbox live and thus, is not a married combo yet either? it has plenty of recent gamesaves, but i assume it never was on a network since the dash is outdated.

Yeah, the dash is updated automatically when you log in.

Its possible it might not have been on live. Then again, it's possible that it might have. It could have been online when MS Dash version 4920 was the current dash. But yeah, if it hasnt been onlive, then it hasnt be on live. But theres no way to tell. Well, none that I'm aware of.

yes, i understand it could have been on xbox live as far back as dash 4920 - i was not as distinct as i could have been with my question...

my actual question is whether or not dash 5960 was the live 3.0 update from june/july 2004? if it was, then i hope that also means this console has never been married because that is when m$ started marrying eeprom's to hd's.

i loged in for xbox live using a couple of games and the xbox dash was not updated automatically until i tried a game that required the live dash 3.0 update...

in other words, my old dashboard was no indication of whether or not it had been previously married or connected to xbox live.
