"new Hdd" Situation
« on: August 24, 2005, 08:19:00 PM »

I recently have modded my xbox with an X3 CE chip. A Samsung 160gb HDD was also installed at the same time. I have been online before any modding has been done, so I guess my eeprom has been married to the stock drive.

Currently, if I want to play live, I swap the upgraded HDD out with the stock one. This is a real pain in the arse and I would really like to use my upgraded drive all the time.

So, you know what's going on with my box now. I have read two marriage theory threads, but still do not know for certain what I want to do will not get me banned.

Will replacing the EEprom be all I have to do? I'll have an old used gamertag, with a new eeprom and a new HDD. That it?

If I get banned, or flagged(whatever it is that happens), will my xbl account work on the xbox 360 still? Or will that gamertag be gone for good?

----
Next question...
What does the X3 do to keep me from signing on? Does it just block me from going through with it if I try, or does it 'hide' my gamertag while it's loaded with the chip? Originally, my gamertag would not show up at all when the chip was enabled. Then one day it was there, and I had an itchy feeling to click it and see the chip stop me. Please lmk, it's bugging me, and I don't want to find out the hard way.

Thanks for any help.

A big piece of advice: Even though you probably have a Live blocking bios, wich you can check at the bios homepage, DON'T TRY TO LOG IN with the chip on, just to see what happens. You've been warned wink.gif

Good luck mate.

Ahh, I've fallen victim to the "Do not click here" line in your sig. Couldn't resist lol.

I'll buy an eeprom from that huge thread in the b/s/t forum.

By X3, I was referring to the bios.

Thank you for helping me out. And yes, I will try my best to refrain from trying to access Live. I'm a sucker for those types of things. Like your sig...

Thanks again.

I hope this works, as I am going to try this myself.  Good luck to boyd and myself, though I don't think we need it.  Thanks Lord Magnus!  Oh and do I have to partition my HDD to look like a stock drive?  And if yes, what are the sizes of the c and e partition?  Thanks a bunch.

Thanks a lot for the replies!  I will hopefully be doing this tonight, and I will prolly try using Net Prep as I don't have a slayer's disk made and it sounds like net prep will do what i need it to.  I will let you know what happens, and thanks again.

What do y'all mean format?

I have an X3, and I think it formatted it for me. I have a C drive, E drive, F, X, Y and Z drive. The C drive is 499 mb. Is that what it's supposed to be?

And what are these programs supposed to do for you exactly? What does partition mean?

btw, my C drive is identical to the old drive. My E drive has all the old stuff as well, just with XBMC installed in there also.

You can probably see I'm confused as hell. Please help.

I bought a new EEprom and installed it. The only thing that may get me banned now is this partition crap that y'all are talking about now, so I'll hold off on my first login until I understand what is going on.

format means prepare a HDD to be written and read to.  partition is divide a HDD into different sections, usually labeled c, e, f, g, etc.  When you say "old drive" do you mean stock hdd?  If that is the case, and you've already installed xbmc and have that working, you are all good to go.
Unfortunately, no one listed the partition sizes on a stock drive, so we can't compare.  I'm not even sure if partition size matters, though someone has said it did, but i read that it didn't matter.  I think the most important thing is that you have unaltered stock files, such as unaltered MS dash, or MS update.
oh and those programs do formating and partitioning which also can be done by the x3 i guess.  I guess the x3 prolly partitions the drive to stock settings, but with an f or g drive.  It sounds to me like you should ok.

wink.gif  Oh here's a question for ya...

Does locking the drive mean I cannot FTP into it? What advantages does an unlocked drive have? If it can do everything a locked drive can, I'll leave it locked for good.

Thanks for the help.

I'd love to hear the size of your c and e partitions.  That would be helpful.  And as for the locking/unlocking question:
1)  I'm 99% sure that you can FTP to a locked drive,
2)  and, as far as I have come to know, the only advantage of leaving a drive unlocked, is that you cannot connect to xbox live because you will get an error code (13?) when running MS dash.  Since you and I both have a nice modchip off switch, I am going to leave mine locked as well.
Let me know how things go.

I'll get right back to ya once I hook it up later tonight.

Last question. It's off topic but I don't want to start a whole thread.
Where does the MS dashboard store the music? I've looked around the C and E drives, well briefly E(it's all numbers...), and couldn't find the music I transferred. I'd like to store it all there so games can play it.

You know, since I put my modchip and new HDD, I haven't copied any music to it using MS dash, but you make a good point; it would be nice to have a lot of our music accesible through the MS dash.  I'll look into this later, or tonight if I don't get the chance.
The only thing is that I doubt the MS dash can read many formats, including mp3 which is the format that I have the vast majority of my music in; I would guess it records and read WMA, but we shall see.  I'll do a test and get back to you.  Oh and I didn't test the size of my c drive, but I added evox and avalaunch to the c, and it was reading .48 GB (or 480MB) free space, so I would say that your value of 499MB is correct for the partition size for the c drive.
