Anyone Have A Black S Controller W/ Green Cable...
« on: May 21, 2004, 05:07:00 AM »

The standard black S controller, but instead of the cable being matte black, it's kinda transparent green.  Anyone got one of these, it's like someone at the factory messed up and put Halo LE edition cables on the standard black S controller.

I ask, because I have one and I've just realised how poor quality a controller it is.  I just bought a new black S controller and I noticed the cable was different (matte black), and I'm playing Ninja Gaiden and the new controller is heaps more responsive and plays a LOT better.

Was wondering if anyone else had the same experience.

All of my S controllers are black but all have the green cords.  Comparatively they are equal to the new S controllers that I have bought (twelve total).  I have not found a signficant difference in terms of their responsiveness.  To which specifically are you referring (D-pad, sticks, buttons?)

On my green cable S controller, the thumbsticks are stiffer and the buttons are "soft touch", on the black cable S controller the thumbsticks are smooth and the buttons "click" on pushed.

In Ninja Gaiden, I can perform the moves Izuna drop and gleam 100% of the time with the black cable controller, with the green cable controller, gleam fails and doesn't register the 360 all the time, about 50% accurate, and Izuna drop doesn't register all 5 strokes everytime, failing the move about 33% of the time.  With the new controller they work 100% of the time.

all the "black" controllers have the green cables, even the original "big" ones

AFAIK all clear and LE controllers have matte black cables

and if you wonder why i said "black" instead of black, its because all the "black" parts of an xbox (case, crontollers, dvd remote) are actually a very dark green, not black

I beg to differ, I definitely have 3 controllers here, all are black, with black cables.  Yes, I have seen quite a few with green cables before as well.  Transparent green and matte green.

This is probably superfluous but if you feel experimental you could open your controllers and compare the stick and pad sets.  I've opened up old controllers which were well used to see the wear and tear on the stick sets and the pads themselves and have not noticed any significant difference.  A particularly adventurous friend of mine even sliced open the pads to see if he could stiffen the springs (for his shoddy LED button mod  :P ).  Again this is probably peripheral to your original post, but it's an idea for an extremely boring rainy day.

I have 2 S controllers, both black with green cables. One is made in Malaysia, the other is made in China. I notice a distinct extra responsiveness in the Malaysian made controller compared to the Chinese one.
Reasons - I don't know ;)
