had you gone on live with your xbox prior to switching the hdd? if you did then thats why you got banned. you will need a new virigin eeprom and a stock hdd, if you want to use your old gamertag. If you want a large hdd you will need to get a new gamertag and a new eeprom still. If your friends  xbox is a compatible version with yours then you can use configuremagic final to put it on.
