Just a thought, but how exactly would anyone be able to "scan" the HDD when the xbox is booted off the M$ BIOS, I mean, there's certainly no FTP server? So if M$ can scan my xbox HDD over the internet and through my firewall, how would I go about such an action across my local network?

i bought a second hand xbox that had all the stickers intact, and it looks to never have been opened, and when it tried to go on xbox live, it claimed that it was already banned (softmod?). So i phoned up MS to ask them about it, and they said to send it in. I did, and they ended up sending me a refurb unit. So it appears that M$ is using some sort of database for the banning, but it also seems that seen as how they couldn't just pull the info out of the database and unban it, it's something more permanent

I would tend to agree. However, I believe that to stay within the law, M$ would need to update the Terms Of Service if they wanted to scan for evox etc. If they did change the TOS to allow this, we should have enough time to take action.

WoW, from reading this I think it's safe to say that the Scene realy needs a mole in the M$ headquarters.

This linked thread and those linked via its first post provide related information.  They preceded the "marriage" plus "flagged GT" theories, which subsequently explained the original findings (mostly...) eh.

Thanks [maven], that's exactly what I was after.
Thanks for the links eh. - a lot for me to catch up on there, although I am familiar with much of it.
Having the xbox download and run a file to do it all is the most logical thing, I think ppl packet sniffed the data to find out more about this too.
I wonder if something else on the LAN could intercept and communicate with Live for the "handshake" instead of the modded xbox - either a stock xbox or software on a PC?

i think that either lifting up xbox cover and keeping the hard drive un-screwed ... and having LIVE hard drive and MOD hard drive is the safest way. Or as other poster says get a xbox just for live.

Because who knows what NEW stuff MS will do ... and you always have to be worried about being BANNED.

This way it takes me less than 15 seconds to swap out hard drives and I have PEACE of MIND knowing I CAN NEVER BE BANNED!  MODDED xbox has NO Account info and LIVE is dis-abled and wrong IP and DNS info is in LIVE config ...so ... It can NEVER connect to LIVE!

Anything else is just asking for TROUBLE!  Because if you have kids or "friends over" they can't mess around with LIVE on MODDED xbox ...and they can play on LIVE with Stock xbox Hard drive!

You do know the xbox is down to £99.99 don't you? I bought a new one last week and paid £109 with Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow and an Xploder cheat memory card, and yes all were brand new from a well known shop.

My current set up is a stock hdd with an Xecuter 2.6 and X2 live blocking bios in a v1.1 box (swapped it for the new xbox bought above) and a new gt, using a 2 month trial card. I use the xbox to stream live music so I obviously have it connected to the internet but I make sure the chip is turned off when I go on live. So far I am unbanned  smile.gif .

I mentioned in a previous post that I think it is entirely possible that M$ are pre-marrying the hdd and eeprom since they are probably trialing new ideas for the Xenon, plus, with modern manufacturing proccesses demanding full traceability then they probably already had the database set up it was just a case of linking it to XBL.

Finally, if the rumour about an upgradable hdd is true then they are not going to want people going off and buying standard hard drives to put in their box, they will want you to buy their massively overpriced 'special' drive  grr.gif .
