That's MS for you. All they care about is the money $$.
This would even affect people who haven't modded their systems.
Imagine if their drives died and send it in for repair and had their drives exchanged.
Will they be able to log into live without getting banned?

ok, check it out. ..... . if i have an xbox that i install a 160 gig maxtor drive and then go on live.. ..... playing without getting banned. What happens when the upgraded drive fails in lets say 6 months or a year, and i install a new one of the same manufac. & size, formatted with the same disc. that was used on the first one?     still banned for hardware mod?

Yes, currently, the theories say you would need to install a new virgin EEPROM at the same time as the new HD.

And yes, MS would be able to work around whatever they're doing.

Considering how much money MS has lost on the xbox hardware I can understand them not tolerating 3rd party hard drives. And might I just refresh your memory of an important little fact. You are NOT A MS CERTIFIED XBOX TECHNICIAN... ergo opening your xbox in the first place is a violation of their terms of service for xbox live and a warranty void all in one feel stroke. You break the rules, be prepared to pay the price if you get busted. MS has spent a lot of money on xbox, live, support, and 3rd party software... what kind of idiot wouldn't protect that investment? God I hate ignorant kids that form opinions based on what they think the "cool" perspective is. I would be making an effort to recoup my losses as well. MS would certainly remarry eeproms and HDDs if they had to be repaired.

You think MS is so money hungry? If it was my company I would be targeting P2P networks, bittorrent seeders, and every person that posts on a messageboard like this. COnsidering the circumstances I think they have been overly tolerant.

And one more thing.... if you're old enough to work which I doubt by the quality of your post, do you go to work every day just because you want to help the company out and make the world a better place? NO. You're a slave to the dollar like every other person in this world. Everyone only cares about money. Why do you think capitalism exists in the first place? ugh...kids

First of all Iam not a kid (prolly older than your are). Second lets not forget that anyone that plays on XBlive has A ) puchased an Xbox console B ) purchased a legal copy of their game title C ) purchased the right to log into live (most cases)

I think its more like the "DON'T RIP THE TAG OFF OF YOUR MATTRESS" law
What . .. you buy a car and get it painted because you want it another color? Does that mean the engine won't be a covered repair.

: P

And btw. .. . . did we not buy all of those things????
Or are we just leasing the fucking hardware????

It's a tricky situation.  You bought the Hardware but you did not buy the intelectual propertey that is contained in the hardware.  So when you open the box up you have kinda forfeited your right to use that intelectual property.  MS didn't sell you an xbox install disc they sold you a box.  Xbox live is a service, MS can denie service to anyone for any reason to as long as it is not discriminatory.

That being said My box is modded and I aint gone stop backin up my games or playing on Kai and I love XBMC.

And this thread was about if why not just buy another box cause they will do something else to bann you?  I doubt it I think this will be it cause xbox Next is comming and I don't think they want to spend the money on this.  Besides that will just give us insight as to what to expect from Xbox Next.
