Setting Up An Account For Testing - Right Now!
« on: November 11, 2004, 02:34:00 PM »

I'm going to set up a new Xbox Live account.  Basically I'm ready to do it right now but I wanted to see if there were suggestions for tests while setting up the account.

I noticed someone in another thread suggested running a packet sniffer while setting up the account.  I don't know which one to use, but I'm willing to do it if someone will make a suggestion for a windows based app.

I'm also wondering what harddrive format I should use, as far as the contents of C and E.

My xbox is a 1.1, TSOP flashed with X2 4983 and retail 4817.  I have a 250 gig WD hdd, with the F partition holding all extra stuff.  My dash (thc lite) boots from C: as evoxdash.xbe

My thoughts are to clean out C: and E: (couple game save hacks).  This will require that I reflash, probably to 4981, so I can boot dash from F:  I'm willing to leave the drive as is, too, to test if there is a scan of files from XBLive.

Anyway, if anyone has requests or suggestions, please post them soon and I will do my best to accomodate.  I'm going to be setting up the 2 month free trial that came with H2.  I'm not too worried about EEPROMS.  I'm willing to go through a couple.

This account is mainly for testing purposes, so please post suggestions.

Ok, I have set up an account.  I used a packet sniffer during both the account setup and  the dash update when loading Halo 2 the first time.  The log is available in text, DEC, and HEX format, all in a .rar  If you would like a copy, please pm me with your email address.

and xbox live traffic sans voice chat is encrypted, so good luck with that.  Even if it wasnt, just because information is sent to MS does not mean they make bans based on all of it.

Right.  I really don't know how to decipher these packets, but there is readable text in them that may be of use.  Obviously all the information that is being sent to M$ during a n account creation and initial sign on is included in these packets, so with the right equipment I would assume one could figure out exactly what they know about us.

Anyway, someone had suggested this and I was making an account so I thought I would do it.  Perhaps it's a futile effort, but it's there if anyone wants the knowledge.

QUOTE
if you get a different EEPROM (specifically one that is unbanned, but HAS played on XBL before), a stock HDD, and create a new account, will you still get banned? basically, my question is that are EEPROM/HDD combinations married into a global database, or is it just added as information for your specific XBL account?

You need to get an eeprom that has never been on xbox live before.

I had an unmodded xbox that I used a two month xboxlive trial on. When the trial was over I canceled, and modded my xbox soon after. I added a 160GB hard drive and then on tuesday used a new xbox live trial code and made a new gamertag. I played halo 2 for about an hour on xbox live, and then yesterday morning I was banned.

umm, I've never been on live before with any of my xbox's or hdd's or eeprom's

so yeah, this was a total virgin test, attempting to try different things and try to figure out exactly what M$ is banning.

I ended up cleaning up C and E of all extra software and game saves.  I reflashed my bios to 4981 so it will boot dash's from F:  The only thing I wasn't entirely sure on was what retail bios to use, since my TSOP had been flashed with a 1 mb 4983 bios before attempting this and I don't know what bios came with my box.  Anyway, I'll post results in the next couple of days as I await the bannination.

I was banned Saturday afternoon.  We played on Live for 2 nights, and then Saturday afternoon when I tried to log on I was banned with the "modified software or hardware" message.

The only thing I can think of was that the MS Dash was set to autologon to Live.  When the mod was enabled, it would not boot MS Dash, so I didn't think that would be a problem.  However, does this autologon setting apply to games as well?   If I had the Halo 2 disc in the drive when booting the box modded, it would boot directly to the game, and I'm wondering if perhaps it logged on at this point.

Oh well.  Time for a virgin, Live-only box.
