Gamertag Vs. Xbox
« on: November 11, 2004, 08:38:00 AM »

For many of you, this will be obvious.  But I've been reading through this forum A LOT since getting banned and I have seen many posts asking about gamertags and the bans.  I think something could be said for those who may be new or just not understanding.

When you sign up for Xbox Live, you are creating an account.  That account is an agreement to use the Xbox Live service.  All that account regards is you, your gamertag, and how you play on Xbox Live.  It does not regard your xbox at all (at least as far as I know).  You don't even need to own an xbox to have a gamertag (account).

When your Xbox is connected to Xbox Live, it is not associated with your Gamertag.  You can play from 100 different xboxes with the same Gamertag, so how can MS know which particular xbox is yours.  That is why they do not ban your gamertag.

What they do is just ban the box.

If your gamertag (account) has been cancelled, then you were probably caught cheating or being abusive.  From what I've seen, thats the only way to get your account (gamertag) cancelled.  If they may tell you your gamertag has been flagged.  If that is the case, more than likely they are just going to be watching you for cheating, or many repeated offenses with connecting with a modded xbox.  But even then, they will just keep banning the xbox.  It costs them nothing to ban an xbox.  It costs them $50+ to ban a user.

I'm just trying to make it clear for those who haven't understood, the gamertag is connected to you, and is your key to access xbox live.  The xbox, is not connected to you, and is only your means to connect to xbox live.

I hope this helps some.

PS, on a side not, the only way for them to know which xbox belongs to which user, would be to register it on their site.  You may notice that if you go to xbox.com, and sign in, that it has asked if you want to "register".  This is optional.  Don't do it.
