don't harddrives and dvd drives have some form of firmware?  can their firmware be hacked, hex edited, ect., to possibley change the serial numbers on them so that if upgraded, you can change those numbers to match the originals?  just a thought.  i'm no hacker, just thought i've heard of something like that before.  just not in detail.

My friend changed his Box to Stock in August when he killed his chip (took chip out and put in MS HD).

Obviously MS had logged his MODDED HD serial and Banned him today (he had been playing on live for a while w/o problem).

He did not change his EEPROM when he put in his stock drive (who would have known).

So making the HD serial the same as the Original drive would not be useful, just to change the serial period should allow you to use the same drive.

That is an awesome idea in theory. In actual implimentation it is nearly impossible as most drive vendors have major differences in the format and function of their firmware and then each drive from a vendor often varies greatly as well. That doesn't even account for all the models that are branded as OEM.
If it is done it would probably only be for a select number of drives. If at all.

MS frequently visits these forums and any attempt to patch the hdd would be fixed by their software coders within a day of being released. they own xbl service and can do whatever they please and now they got all of us by the ballz

I know what you are thinking but it would be usefull because someone that was banned could just get a new eeprom and change the serial number to anything.(ofcorse not the original which would already be banned)
Otherwise one would have to get a new eeprom and buy a new harddrive, am I correct.

P.S. I could be missing out on somthing here, it seems like there finding new stuff every minute.

isn't what M$ doing kinda illegal? I mean, imagine if our PCs were scanned for certain files while connected to a server and then banned you for having stuff? Surely that is why people who have "dodgy" copies of windows can still use windows update. I wonder if we can sue ...

I'm not 100% on why they do this. I understand because people are downloading games and all. So the people that try to go on live and didn't get banned before, they obviously bought the game. So this is just forcing people to copy that game to their harddrive, use xbconnect or other tunneling software, then sell the game online since they can't use it on live and MS banned them.

What other reasons???

what M$ is doing isnt really illegal. If you read your user agreement it says you are buying a lease to your xbox, so you dont actually own the xbox you payed for, M$ does, they are just letting you use it. lol.

If you do BOTH you should be ok.

MS will see a "new" Xbox.  Even if MS starts taking HD model #s you should be ok with a stock drive.

I however, if MS starts getting model #s I will be banninated  

Just change the EERPOM too.  My friend un-modded his box.  Chip off, HD replaced for stock = BAN.

MS had his old HD serial linked to his EEPROM

i've done some digging.  it seems that without a manufacturer specific program, changing the manufacturers serial number/model number is a hard cookie to crack.  would take a hacking guru to do.  question is, are they using those serials, or volume id serials?  my guess would be manufacturers because the volume id serial changes anytime a drive is formatted.  

but, if people are formatting their original drive with slayers, and then getting banned, could explain their bans.  since formatting the stock drive would not change the manufacturers serial/id, but it would change the volume id.

just a thought for those that are far smarter than i am.

no, understand, i am not saying that people ARE getting banned for formatting their harddrives.  what i was bring up is there are too different types of serial numbers for a harddrive.  there is the manufacturers hdd serial, and model number.  and there is a serial number created when you format your harddrive, also called a volume id (i've seen it called both).

only way to test this is if people with stock drives and no harddware changes are getting banned, and if they aren't committing human error (signing on with mod chip on)

after doing more research, i'm not sure they are checking the volume id.  i believe its the manufacturers serial, as that is what shows up in the eeprom.

but could still be a theory for those getting banned with a stock drive, no harddware changes, and modchip off.

The point of this 'exploit' is to let modders who had their hdd and eeprom logged is to let them change their hdd without having to get kicked off live....  This is entirely a model/serial # fake on the hdd firmware...   dont see wat the super duper wooper cooper (ok i'll stop too) config magic has to do with this
