Preliminary Xbox Live Questions

Ok I have a couple questions:

1.) I have an XBOX that I have never signed up for an XBL account on (although I was going to but canceled when they wanted a year commitment.) When I connected at first It had a X2.3+ and stock HDD. It boots evox from the C:. Should I try with this BOX? Should I format the HDD back to factory settings before I try or just go with it as it is?

2.) I have a second XBOX that I purshased with a burned out HDD. I put in an X3 and a 40 gig HDD but it has never been on XBL. So after reading the responses in another thread I assume that this will work. I have apps/games located on F: drive but I boot evox from the C:. Let me know what you think before I sign up for XBL.
