Cannot Connect
« Reply #45 on: November 24, 2004, 07:40:00 PM »

i had this problem with a communication error. I was never able to connect to live right after modding, so I knew I wasn't banned. after reading through these postings, I tried the "engulinjhkj video switcher" (i forget what the name was), just push the A and B buttons( it doesn't seem to switch anything),and i also turned off the "setup network" setting under "system setings." Then what do you know, it worked. I turned the "setup network" back on and the live still works, so maybe the switcher does work.

I was banned earlier yesterday and received the modified error, with my original stock harddrive.  I dropped in my 120 gig and just tried to connect to live for the hell of it and received the network error mentioned at the top of the page and i did not change my setup at all so i'm assuming that the message does mean a ban.

bah

to check if your banned do the WXYZ check

go to your xbox live tab, do the shit to test the connection.. wait for it to finish

highlight the HELP tab and press Y

check your WXYZ codes

if yours looks like this:
Y: yyyy - xyyyy

if x = 6 then you are banned... if it equals anything else you are not banned

very simple isnt it?

also, check your ping... (last one...) if its 0ms you just cant connect to live for some reason
usually power cycling your modem/router/xbox should fix it

if youve never been on live before and cant connect, then make sure your router is compatible..
in your router for everyone turn off any VPN features (assuming you dont use them)

i thought i was banned too but it turns out if u unplug your xbox while connected to live it jumbles your router a lil and wont let u connect

as i say though the WXYZ is the best way to cehck if your banned... if the first spot of the second group of Y is 6 you are banned... if not your not banned and infact your having network problems.. changing your eeprom only fixes the connection problems because your mac is messed up.. thats why cloning your mac address works (cloning macs is also used if your ISP only allows one connection with your internet).. (ie: they dont allow you to share a connection).. but the odds of your isp not allowing this is very slim

hope this helps.. didnt bother reading the last 2 pages of this post so hopefully this isnt old news to you guys

I just did a low level format on my HDD which confirmed that it wiped my disk.bin clean, but after installing the new eeprom I can't connect.  I first got the "check you router's MTU" and after switching the Pal/NTSC video setting I am now getting the "check your cables" error message.  I know some of you guys are going to say "If you're getting this message YOU'RE BANNED."  But, I don't think so.  The drive is completely clean, so there is no Live account to ban.  Every other time I have been banned and put in a new eeprom, I was at least able to recover an account or start a new one and connect for at least 12 hours.  I can't even attempt to create an account.
I have done the WXYZ test and no 6's anywhere.  I'm getting 0ms on my ping and after power cycling everything I still have no success.  I have tried a hard wire to my router and even straight to my cable modem.  Nothing!
The only thing I can think of is either it's a MAC address issue or the eeprom I was given has been on Live before.  Any suggestions are appreciated. TIA

well even if the eeprom was on live its not banned
you dont have that 6 so your not banned

try the mac address clone...

do you share internet between multiple computers?
does your xbox obtain an ip and dns server fine?

have u tried another xbox on the same connection?

just think of ways to determine if its the xbox or the ISP...

I assume through my router.  Maybe you could help me out with explaining this.

I don't share a connection and have never had problems in the past.  I have a cable modem into my Linksys wireless G router, with one PC and some wireless peripherals (print server, wireless media center, XBOX) running off it.  The IP and DNS are all obtained with no problems either.

I haven't tried another XBOX on the same connection, but again I've had no problems connecting in the past using it stock or with other eeproms.

I'm not the most knowlegable when it comes to networking but then again it's not all that difficult, and everything else doesn't have any trouble connecting to the internet.  This leads me to believe that it's has something to do with the eeprom, since this is when all the trouble started.  I was thinking that if the eeprom had been previously banned, that would be the reason I can't even attempt to establish an account.  All the other eeproms at least let me get that far.  Again, any input is appreciated.

Did you mean cloning the address through my router?  I tried that with my pc's MAC and that killed all connection to the internet.  Should I be entering another address there?
I also tried this through the XBL controls with about every MAC I have.  Nothing.

I'm about to through this F*&king thing out the window.
