Cannot Connect To Xbox Live

I just tried for the first time to connect to xbox live and it tells me yhat it needs to update, however, mine says "Xbox Live is not responding".    I can't figure out why it is doing this.  Does anyone have a clue?

My setup,

Plain old Xbox with no mods whatsoever.   Very first year Xbox came out.
Connected through Roadrunner with dlink di 604 router.
