Ntl Uk?
« on: April 20, 2004, 08:08:00 AM »

Hi all,

I am hoping to get xbox live next month,

i currently live in the UK and my broadband operator is NTL.

Do you have to pay £5 to NTl for the "Xbox Gaming Service"?, my friend says you do not have to and they are conning you.

So, if you have xbox live and have ntl in UK please reply whther you pay  the £5 to NTl or not.

Kind regards

I use NTL in the UK and I dont pay the extra £5.  The extra £5 gives you another IP address so that you dont need a router or use ICS on your main PC.  Thats it.

if you are not going to use a router then you will need to do either of two things.

1. use a "software routing" solution such as Windows Internet Connection sharing. If you go with this, you'll need your PC on when you want to play xbox live.

2. OR pay the £5 for another IP address, with 2 IP's you will be able to use your PC and xbox together with no router, as all a router allows you to do is share a single IP address amoung many computers through NAT.

Of course if you want you can not pay the £5 AND not pay for a router, but you will only be able to connect one device at a time to the cable modem then.

I got the Xbox Live starter kit as soon as I could. I hooked it straight up2 my set top box but it wouldn't work ohmy.gif . The set top box only gives a connection to mac addy's it knows thats why you have to kinda register your PC when you set it up with ntl. Once I had my router set up the hardest part of setting up Xbox live was spelling my name and address out biggrin.gif

Get a router smile.gif

I think the easiest route for you to take at the moment would be to connect the Xbox via the modems ETHERNET connnection and the PC via the USB connection.

You'll only be able to use one or the other at a time this way though.

Set the Xbox to 'Automatic' in the options and it'll detect everything from the modem.

Will that work?  I thought the modem was 'locked' to the pc that it is used with?  I know you can get around this by leaving the modem swithed off for a few hours.  Does this method get around this because the modem is attached to the pc via USB, does USB not have a MAC address that the modem is locked too?

Another fairly easy otpion would be to connect the computer to the modem via USB and then the XBOX to the PC using a cross over cable and enable Internet Connection Sharing ont the PC.  This would mean both could be used at the same time although the PC would have to be switched on to use the xbox on the internet.

That's exactly the way my mate used to do it before he got the same router as me.
