Making Connection Faster?
« on: April 12, 2004, 08:56:00 AM »

tongue.gif  also, length (xbox to router) the cable is..the longer the cable, the more the lag. try to get it as close as you can to the cable modem and the router. also, even though your xbox is wired to the wireless router, you will lose throughput from the router to the modem if that connection is wireless. i'd suggest getting a small hub and plug your xbox/wireless router into the hub, then the hub to the cable modem. hence you will have an all-wired connection to the modem from the xbox.  just my .02 from wireless experience.

Thanks for the info...

My cable modem is wired to my router which is wired to my xbox....the xbox is about 12ft away, but the cable is like 15ft long. it's an older grey cat-5 cable that i took from work muhaha.gif , and it is rolled up after every use?....I wonder if I get a new cable if it will be better...(I can't get any closer to my modem)
try getting a newer cable, i'm not sure if it would help, but it's just a suggestion

I thought maybe there might be some setting or hardware to change or buy...to make the connection have more bandwidth. but i'm not sure???

not to my knowledge, but there may be. try in the pc forum for that kind of stuff. maybe try calling your local computer store, also

Cable has noting to do with it...

Problem has to do with your upload speed.  Call your internet provider and see what your uplaod is capped at... probably around 256k.

Check with your ISP.  Sometimes you can get upgrade packages that will give you more upload/download speed.

cable has to do with it. if you live next door to the provider, and i live 3 miles away, your throughput will be greater because the information has to travel less distance, and there is less interference.  usually the more upstream you have, the more expensive the service will cost.  and don't look for any of these 'cable uncapper' programs you may find, because most likely they will get your service shut down.

is there any way to get more? one of my friends lives like 15 min away from me running the same setup and he can host with no problem??
(same ISP)

That doesn't mean you are both given the same bandwidth... for example, if you are both on Cable broadband, the two fo you are probably on different part of the network.  Yours may be more congested than his.  Or maybe you are having connectivity issues and he's not...

there aint really any setting you can change to give you more bandwidth, you will have to get more upload speed from your isp, here in the UK cable isp's dont give or offer more then 128kbs upload.
if you get adsl isp then you get double so u can host a lot more players on xbox live

My ISP said that I have 256kbs upload speed, but I cna't host more then 4 players without lag. I'm running it through a router....maybe some setting on my router is slowing things down....can I set my router to a wide open setting? Casue my ISP wants another $40 a month to double my speed.....that would be nice but not worth the money.
