QUOTE (No Mess @ Mar 9 2004, 01:01 AM)
No ban on my 120 gig HDD.  I have a v1.0 xbox and played on xlink with Rainbow Six 3.  However RS3 is a live aware game and connects to live attomatically, but I never got banned from using xlink with a flashed TSOP and hacked bios.  I think it might have to do with the fact that my HDD was never updated with the "Xbox Live" tab on the M$ dashboard.  I consider myself very lucky that my dash wasn't upgraded, or I would be banned.  Been on Llve since Christmas.

You can not be banned using xlink, live aware game or not. If you have never set up your xbox to connect to live its not going to do it by itself.

Seems like it would be better just to post people who have been banned, cause the list will be enourmous otherwise as I am one of the thousands who hadn't been banned.

rolleyes.gif  Live's privacy statement (shown below) has a portion where they say you agree with Micro$oft reading your dashboard and kernel version.

I'm really surprised no one has mentioned HD replacements for hard drives that have died...  Surely Micro$oft has nothing against people that have had amature hard drive replacement work done and don't even use a hacked BIOS.

Interestingly, in the automotive industry, it is illegal for the automotive manufacturers to void your warrenty for using OEM equivalent aftermarket parts.  If Micro$oft started banning simply because you replaced your hard drive, I bet you'd have a good case to argue if you hadn't modified your system in any other way...  At the very least, it might be newsworthy enough for Slashdot.  rolleyes.gif

80 Gig Samsung still kicking it up on XBOX Live.

M$ would be shooting them selves in the foot if they start banning peeps with modded box's. Think about it, even though your box is modded you still have to pay $50 a year for the subscription and you still have to pay aproxamately $50 per game. Think of all that revenue they will loose out on if they start banning us.

I personally think they wont ban us. We all know how greedy M$ is and the fact they are still loosing money on XBOX will only go in our favor.

What does sux though is the fact that the potential for them to do this for us real. I hope I didnt waste my $70 on my Live Starter Kit.

i had a couple of friends come over to test this out
xbox 1( mine) 120 gig WD
xbox 2 80 gig maxtor
xbox 3 200 gig segate

after playing a little and leaving the on live for about 7 hours, no ones xbox got banned, EXCEPT for xbox 2.

**note the hdds were clean as far as drives C& E, and no chiops were on.

so..................... i guess they are banning some, or at least no WD or Segates.....

MS is not selective when banning.  They know about every hacked bios that logs on and they ban every one they can.  Aparently they know about every harddrive too - at this point it would be very difficult to conclude that they engage in selective banning over the harddrive issue for a few reasons - first, this would indicate a large and unnecessary departure from their current zero tolerance policy.  Second, there are always occasional people who get banned but firmly believe their chip was off at the time (maybe an unintentional D0 grounding - likely user error but it happens).

Given the numbers of people playing retail purchased games on Live with modchips off (a fairly hardcore group of gamers) it makes little economic sense for MS to bother and I don't think that we will see anything result from the HD issue in the near future.  That being said, the modding community should continue to behave respectfully and not in any way try to mess with Live as a permanent records of users and their xboxes with large hard drives is a loaded gun should they decide to use it.

80gb HDD, no problems. I'm curious as to whether I can simply switch back to my old HDD were I to get banned.

you could if it get a new eeprom and relock that drive with it.  then no problems...

I don't think a new eeprom would help unless you had a hdd to match it.

The only way that I could see this as being a possibility would be if M$ is only detecting Manufacturer info.   SEagate and WesterDigital OK.  Anything else is not.  Just a thought.

Next.  It was brought up before by several people, myself included, that M$ may be gathering this data in an attempt to determine the viability of a hard drive in XBOX 2.  It just occures to me though.  I remember reading in the list of features/enhancements for Live 3 (Tsunami) that they are providing for remote storage area for team and clan info.  It now makes sense.  It is most likely an attempt by M$ to determine how much space to allot to each live user for save games.   I forsee, in the near future, that ALL LIVE games will nolonger store LIVE info on your local system.  All that data will be maintained on the M$ server.  You may ask why.  To prevent things like the hacking of RB6 profiles or any of the other cheats that have cropped up for LIVE games.    Just another thought.  But I think I may be on to something with this one.

This topic is heading nowhere. There has already been enough discussion regarding the use of a large HD with Xbox Live. If someone is banned, then post a topic and maybe we can figure out why. Otherwise, this is a just a spam-o-topic
