Do Game Developers Have To Use Live?
« on: December 05, 2003, 05:07:00 PM »

Well if the game is online then it will probabley be on a MS server because MS wants to control all the servers using Live. Games like Halo that have system link are still be made and are usually found in al games that support live.

beerbaron, if you want to play games online without Live and its charge, get X-Link or XBConnect to play the game online. But, you won't be able to download content from those services, or set up voice chats with buddies. With paying the Live fee, you are able to do things like that.

That's what I assumed was the case. But I am more interested to know if game companies that want to make online XBox games are required by their licence from MS  to make those games only playable online through XBox live.

Yes, for a game to be playable on Xbox Live, the game developer has to allow MS to control the online server.

Why are you against this?

As for why you wouldn't want to give MS control of the servers, I dunno. Ask EA.

And then ask them about when their 2005 sport titles are on Xbox Live.

(That's the big rumor)

i thinkt hast why you dont see as many online games for PS2 as xbox (EA doesnt count, lol) because the developers dont want to make the game, then set up free servers (at their expense) so people can play online

and everyoneknow MS is a big control freak, they want control of everything

When you are playing against people on XBox live, are you playing the games on servers run by MS.

Yes.

Or are your XBoxes acting as clients and servers.

Your Xbox can connect to Live, and in games like Rainbox Six 3, your XBox can be a dedicated host for the game.

I reckon they would be permitted, but then I don't think its likely at all that they would do it.

Why not just pipe traffic the same format as with live for the a system link option? Then 3rd parties can handle it, and average consumers won't think "whats this dodgy online compatibility?"

Some games are peer-to-peer, some games are clients->server.  Unfortunately, they leave it all up to the players from what I've seen.  MS is not running dedicated servers themselves in the games I have played (Perhaps they might in Unreal, Wolfenstein, and Rainbow Six?).
