Getting Download Content On Your Non-live Xbox

QUOTE (REMEMBER = DO ALL THIS WITH YOUR MODCHIP OFF)
You can then install the Live dash from the original game if you don't already have the Xbox Live tab on your dash. Once you have the dash installed, you can then just copy the account to your Xbox from the memory unit in the MS dash.

Now that you have the account and Live on your Xbox, load the game and get the content. Once you are done, its best to delete the account off from your Xbox. If two Xboxes sign onto Live with the same account, the last Xbox will be banned.

Also, the content will work with either the original game (of course) and also a HD/DVD backup.

Finally, OXM (Official Xbox Magazine) will release official download content periodically.

Content OXM has release so far
Splinter Cell - Kola Cell bonus level
Run Like Hell - Two new characters (Cyber Nick and Eightball) and a challenge level called "Arena Death"
Toe Jam and Earl 3 - Three new characters (Suteki, Earbot, and Geekjam) and two environments (Hades and Funkadelic)

Couple questions - why won't XBSM work?  I'm guessing because the account data is stored on the C partition, but I could be wrong.

Also, any idea what makes the downloaded content specific to the Xbox?  I'm wondering if there could be a simple patch applied to some files to make it either Xbox-free or to recode it for another Xbox.

EDIT:  Upon some futher reading, it looks like everyone is suggesting the EEPROM is utilized to validate the downloaded content, which is what I had suspected.  I don't have Live myself, but I'll see if I can get my hands on some downloaded content so I can see what's going on with it there...

Well, if the EEPROM was changed after the content was download, it would be "hidden" on the Xbox. You won't find it in a game. But, if you switch the EEPROM back, it will appear.

I do not have live.  I got my download content off OXM disc #22.  Splinter Cell, RLH, and TJnEarl.

Thanks, I will add to my post. What has been released for Run Like Hell and Toe Jam and Earl?

o.k.
Splinter Cell: Kola Cell(The addon level)

RLH: new character models(skins for nick)
1. Cyber Nick
2. Eightball
and one new "challenge" level called Arena Death

TJ&Earl3:  3 new characters
1. Suteki
2. Earbot
3. Geekjam
and 2 new environments
1. Hades
2. Funkadelic

I don't play TJ&Earl so I can't assess it.  Splinter Cell, I played off my original disc and the Kola addon is awesome.  For RLH, I ran it from the hard drive and the DL content worked great also.  However, the content for RLH is nothing special.

shanafan and I have been running some tests, and there appear to be two hashes in the downloaded content that are likely for validation purposes.  I only had time to check briefly, so I don't know too much about them at this point.  One is in contentmeta.xbx.  I didn't see where the other hash is.  I'll take a closer look tonight.

Ultimately, we'll try to figure out how they are generated, so we can patch the downloaded content to run on any Xbox given.  If we can determine how they're generated, maybe LepPpeR can give us a hand with a patch tool.  The ideal end result would be one where you load in the files with the hash in them along with the eeprom.bin file, and the patch tool takes care of the rest.

Bear in mind, this is all hypothetical at this point.

Both of the hashes are in a contentmeta.xbx file, one in \$c\ and one in \$u\ in \TDATA\.    Each hash is 20 bytes long.  Still haven't found any correlation between these hashes and the EEPROM data.

Mage and I were hashing out some ideas on IRC recently.  I've given up on trying to hexedit the contentmeta.xbx files to match different EEPROMs.  Instead, I'm trying to figure out how to patch the XBE files to unconditionally load the content.  It will be a similar patch to the patch that applies to the media check.  Once I figure it out, I can probably just make a patch.data file for ADR to remove EEPROM validation from the XBE files.
