Xbox Live Won't Connect

Did you try going through the Live setup and letting it auto detect ? Sometimes my sons box won't connect to play RTCW, but it automatically goes to the network setup and auto detects everything and then it works fine.

Yeah I've dont that... thats how I had it. But it won't go past the whole DNS server thing. Its cause I cant register my MAC address with my ISP... and thats my main concern, is why they cant see my MAC address.....

The choice to change your MAC address is not really to change it, but to mask it more or less. Which is setting it up as a static IP, which my ISP doesn't support.

Not to my knowledge it hasnt been modded. I bought a refurbed one. So I guess there is a chance the people before me may have modded and then unmodded before they returned it or whatever they did.  But it worked fine when I was living at my last place, and works fine when I set ip up as a static IP.

1. Check if it's your XBox or not. What network equipment (router's hubs) / pc's do you have available? I would try using a local dhcp server (from Windows NT Server, or Linux, or I'm sure there other DHCP products out there.... ) and seeing if it will pull the address from there, since you said it used to work, odds are it's not your Xbox, but this would rule that out.

2. Check the rest of your network
How is your network configured?  i.e. what's  connected to what.  What kind of modem is it? cable modem?  dsl? Some cable modems latch onto a MAC address the first time there plugged into a device, and won't talk to another device until you pop the reset switch on it.  My Scientific Atlanta does this. So if you and your roommate were sharing a cable modem this way then that would explain it.

Your ISP is full of sh**, cloning a MAC address is nothing like setting up a static IP address. Take the MAC address from the other xbox that is able to connect and clone it to your xbox. If you can't connect then your either banned (which I doubt since you don't have a mod chip) or the NIC on your xbox is bad. If you change the MAC address in your xbox to the one that works that is what the ISP sees. Thats what I had to do with my router because my ISP (cable) used my computer's NIC MAC address.

EDIT: I just re-read your original post. If you can connect on your xbox when you use the info from the other one then the problem is on the ISP's end. They should be able to re-register that MAC address

Yeah thats what M$ said, about re-regin the MAC addy. But they can't even see my xbox behind my modem. At this point in time, I have just "cloned" the MAC address, and use my buddys info on my box, and so far so good. So in general Insight Cable sucks.

I suppose the worst case scenario is that they see this, what they call a "static IP", and shut my service down for like a day. Until I call there, then they will just say go back to a DHCP setting.  Im also thinking of getting a router and trying that instead of using a HUB.
