Isn't the password it was locked with stored in a text file called HDDPW.TXT on the same floppy?

phoenix, thats correct..  and thats where "LiveInfo" comes into play.. if you have a locked hdd and you also have a eeprom.bin file that was used with this hdd at one point this pgm will generate the hdd password for that eeprom & hdd combination..,

Writing software that displays the current HDD password cant really done.. thats the whole reason why there is a password to begin with..  To protect the Data on the disk !

If you have a normal hdd and locked it and forgot the password, the easiest would be to contact the manufacturer to find out what they preset the Master password to, you can then do an ATA  "Erase Prepare" to recover the drive and reset the password..

and btw, ConfigMagic ALWAYS creates a master password of TEAMASSEMBLY, so if you locked with ConfigMagic and somehow end up in this situation you can easily recover..

Does the Master PW allways erase the HD?
do all HDs have a Master Pw set by the manufacturer?

Yes it erases the content...

And Yes the Master Password is always set at the Factory.. Although Sometimes the OEM, like IBM, Compaq or even a distributor or any app could change it (like we do in ConfigMagic).. but best bet would be to contact the manufacturer and ask them:

"I installed Linux and it has a security feature to lock my hdd with the ATA security fetures..  i locked it and forgot the password, please supply me with the Master Password so I can Erase Prepare my drive.. It's ok if I lose everything, I just need my drive back.. it was a big investment for me that is now useless !"

ask them real nice and they'll probably help out..  if it's still under warranty they might try harder to help..
