It doesn't seem anyone has a real idea about this. I have asked and all you get is people guessing. I have a copy of the original EEPRom taken before I accessed the XBOX LIVE TAB (without any form of connection to the net) so I figured if I flash this back then unless they flagged something on the hard disk there would be no trace that I had accessed the livetab.

IF they are flagging on the xbox than surly all these people who switc h EEP romswould just be banned the next time they log on as the flag would remain set on the hard disk. I can only see that MS is flagging something on the EEP Rom itself or you could not unban your xbox without formatting the drives and I not heard anyone doing that before they switch EEP roms to an unbanned one.

So my advice would be if you have a backup of your previous EEP rom then to flash that back. Has anyone compaired an old rom to one that might have been 'flagged' to see if anything has changed?

Is anyone even certain MS is going to such steps to ban xboxs that they would do it BEFORE YOU EVEN BUY A LIVE KIT?? I mean seriously..banning an xbox before you even have the kit seems VERY odd way to go about it. I could remove my matrix, burn it, install live and according to the theory, STILL be banned... That seems odd to me!?

Any proof of this??

This whole question of "Will I be banned if I access the Xbox Live tab with my modchip on/RJ cable not in?" is pointless. Sorry, but it is. Why do you even need to try?

I guess I sometime in the future I will just bite the bullet and buy a kit, disable my mod and try xbox live. IF I am banned I will know for sure and can tell the world that MS does indeed ban you for just accessing the tab while you mod is on (which I still can't begin to believe they would do)

MS have always maintained its to prevent cheating. I can't see them being so aggressive as to ban you for even looking at the xbox live screen when your mod was on. Its pretty hard to cheat at MechAssult when the game isn't loaded and you don't even own an xbox live kit.

I posted a while ago and have been a little busy so havn't kept up on Live forum lately,  but I was a beta tester.  I had a Orig copy of NFL Fever 2003 and had my mod on.  This was about 2 days before the banning and I was just going to try out the XBL as I had just gotten the kit.  I wanted to be careful and make sure that my mod was disabled before I went and tried to connect.  Well sure enough I accidently tried to access XBL with the mod enabled (cause it was late and I was an idiot) but couldn't connect I freaked out and rebooted the xbox.  I then disabled the matrix chip by the eject button and was able to connect to live and download that update and then play on live with no problems and have ever since.  I also might add that before all the live banning maddness I played backups and originals with the mod chip enabled.  I hope that sheds some light on this subject but this was some time ago and things may have changed but just wanted to let you know how it went for me.  I don't have a dash installed yet and now usu play the orig games with the chip disabled just for good measure.

Yup, as a beta tester, backups worked fine on Live. Oh the good old days....

Eh, I have a "real idea" about this. Actually it's not a "real idea" merely fact.

YES pressing the tab attempts causes a connection attempt.

NO you will -NOT- be banned if your Xbox is not hooked to the internet.

The mod chip is detected DURING the connection proceedure by the XBLive code and the machine "reports in" during the connection attempt. Once it does you get banned.

If it is unable to "report in" you will not be banned.

The "backup of your previous EEPROM" is merely poor and uninformed speculation. The XBLive detection mechanism doesn't modify it in any way.

well someone needs to make this clearer. It seems MS is party running on FEAR. People are buying an new xbox or whatever because they had a dream about xbox live while the mod was on.

There has to be some straight facts made somewhere. I just seen a thread saying if you play an original game with the mod on it will ban you, DISPITE being unplugged from the wall. All this rumour spreading is making people think its alot harder to be banned than it might be.

If the only way to be banned is to hit the xbox live tab and then connect to the service you really have to go some to get yourself banned if you are careful.

I just can't see MS's logic in banning people unless they physically try to connect to the service WHILE THE MOD IS ON and the CABLE IS IN. I mean this 'flagging' business sounds like bullshit thats spreading to scare people. Unless someone can honestly say this is the case.

I will soon buy an xbox beta kit. I won't change anything. I know the xbox has accessed live dash while the mod was on but without owning an xbox live kit or internet connection. I will only access the service with the mod physically removed and if I am banned then I can finally put an end to this flagging business.

CRAP!
Quit posting idle speculation!

If your machine is connected to the net with your mod chip on and you:

1 ) Boot a game which connects to XBLive or downloads content, you will be banned
2 ) Hit the XBLive tab, you will be banned
3 ) Perform ANY account maintenance, you will be banned.

If you unplug your machine and do any of the above, you will NOT be banned.

Since it's sooo easy for a sibling, significant other, or yourself to forget these rules there is only ONE foolproof way (that I know of) to protect your machine WHILE being able to utilize the mod chip for OFFLINE play.

a ) Switches alone are no good
b ) Hard drive swaps alone are no good
c ) F_Boot alone is NO good.

What DOES work is a modification to the BIOS kernel that prohibits booting off the CD while the mod chip is on. When used in combination with a F_BOOT type modification you can set your Xbox to ONLY play non-xboxlive games from the hard drive.

Thus with the chip ON (if you've taken the proper precautions!) NO ONE can play a Live enabled game since you keep these off the hard drive.

With the chip OFF you can play original games and get onto XBLive.

You have to jump thru a few hoops to do this, and you loose the ability to boot backups with the mod chip ON, but it does work.

For the moment this is the ONLY "safe" solution.

Now someone will ask me to post a tutorial even though I've described it in detail.

Dear god, now this board will get flooded with people asking how to do this. Hell, I don't know how, but I do know how to use the search button.

Not even shanafan who seems to post alot himself and follow the forums was able to tell me before you that this was incorrect and I would not be banned.

I didn't say that accessing it will/won't get you banned. I just said that I won't recommend trying. I wasn't posting any facts about it.

But, now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

From most of what I've seen, Shanafan doesn't actually help people.. he (I'm assuming he's a he even though he has a picture of a babe [because I don't think real babes come here]) just makes sarcastic comments and makes fun of people... He's just like this lingering stink that likes to muck up the forums... I'm saying this as if everyone didn't know this already.. hehe silly me.
