As proof of the poor "activate/deactivate" design

Sorry, but why do you think the mode 3 is a poor design? You are the first person to say this.

another question.... how do you tell what version of xbox you have?   is there a significant visual difference or is it just a sticker somewhere?  apparently v1.1 is much harder to install a matrix onto and requires an updated bios???  I just bought my box this month with the xmas special.

thanx fellas

To tell what version Xbox you have, check the manufacture date underneath. If it was produced in August or later, it is probably a 1.1

However, some people have said August produced systems were also 1.0 was well.

So, my decision is that if it was produced in September or later, it probably is 1.1

Mode 3 is completely backwards. It should boot in "off" and then require you to eject to "on".... this way you won't accidentally log into xboxlive with your mod enabled.

Sorry dude, but I disagree. Using the mode 3 requires you to be careful. Most people right now don't use Xbox Live so that would a wasted step.

And, I am not sure if it is even possible to boot the onboard BIOS and then go to the Matrix's BIOS without powering off.

Like as with soldering a modchip, you have to be careful. One wrong move and you could fry your board.

You can install external switches to mirror their counterparts on the Matrix circuit board.  See my recently-updated Adding Switches tutorial for info.

Well, one wrong move and you could be banned from Xbox Live.

BUT, swapping my PS2 Gameshark CD with a PS2 backup CD with my OLD Neo 2.2 modchip is way more difficult, eh more of a pain in the ass.
