You NEED a locked drive to get on to Xbox Live. You have to have your modchip off to run the original BIOS for Xbox Live, which requires the HD to be locked.

A switch is the best way and only way to go right now. I believe it doesn't matter what type and size of HD you know, but that it has to be locked.
