also if you want to run  your computer alongside it you need a router to split your internet connection.  A hub works for me and it's cheaper

hub would only work if your ISP gave you multiple ip addresses though

btw, remember to set your xbox to dmz host  on your router, or forward the 3 required ports for it.  you'll have to check with MS what those ports were again.  i've forgotten.

only need to open the ports or set to dmz if you have a router with a true firewall or one that isn't allowing those ports through live for some reason.. A bunch of routers do work without opening any ports because the live service can get through the NAT no problem... Like the linksys befsr41, just hook up and play, no configuring (unless you have to have your router clone your mac address)

heres what I think I will do when I get my new xbox, I will just run the cable modem to my computer and use Windows ICS and another network card and run to the xbox from there... ALOT cheaper than a router, and a hub(plus most ISP's charge extra for more ip addresses)

good idea? yay or nay?

what windows version do you have?

and I'm pretty sure setting up ICS and runnin xbox through your pc will slow it up a bit so you might get more lag with ICS than a router.

ICS will work fine and it will not lag up your games.

I use ICS and it works great..I can host games with 6 players with zero lag so far....thats with 88k upload speed on avg.

Yeah but with ICS you'll need you PC on when you use your xbox.  For 40 bucks go to pricewatch and buy a recommened router.

I have two pcs, they stay on 24/7... I'll be damned if one of them is off... so here is what I will do, and I don't think I'll have lag

Cable -> first pc -> second pc -> xbox

all i need is like 10$ for another network card and I'm good to go... plus routers are a HUGE pain in the ass... I suggest everyone with more than one computer stay away from them if possible

About Hubs...

My setup is this : Cable modem -> Main PC (Ken) -> Hub -> Gijoe and Mr.T

So will this work, heh?

And if it doesn't, i have an extra PCI slot in the main computer, could I have 3 nics and have the xbox be plugged into one.

And the IPs are 192.168.0.x, so would that be a problem.

Thanks.
