Would this affect my ability to play Live games like NBA 2K3, which I wanna try out online tomorrow? I have ADSL, so the ping I expect would be like 300 to say the UK.

Also: WHat the Live screen actually like? Gamepy 3dish or what?

                                    I've seen decent speeds on games with ping times over over 1000.

I rarely join a server that has a ping less than 200 though.

Ping is only measuring packet latency. Consistency is far more important.

XBLive only really needs 64kbps to operate very WELL, so your DSL line will smoke this.
