Got your attention yet?

Good!

If you are going to install the new Xbox live it is a very good idea to do the following.

1 - Before you install the new Update disk, backup C: again
2 - Rename the default dashboard back to xboxdash.xbe and reboot.
    Check that it works.
3 - With the original dashboard, working insert or boot the new Xboxlive disk.
4 - After the update, turn off the machine and backup C: yet again to another folder.
5 - Now boot the Evolution-X dash from a CD and rename the files back to how you had them.

Now here is the important part.

Unless you have backed up C:\ like I said above, under no circumstance reboot the XboxLive update disk with the games on it!

LET ME REPEAT.

DO NOT let the Xbox Live disk boot up in your machine again!

If you do it will NUKE the MS Xbox Live dash after producing a cryptic  not able to update error.

Even if you rename the MS dashboard back it back it will no longer work.

YOUR only recourse is to restore from a backup of your ENTIRE C:\ partition.

I've tried this several times with identical results.

PLEASE someone pin this.

The offending executable is called UPDATE.XBE

If you remove it the Xbox Live cd is then "safe" and can't attempt to re-update your box.

Note that this file is also present on some of the new Live Enabled games such as NBA2k3. If you accidentally hit Live and "account setup" with this disk in your machine you'll get the same result!

You can either run the program off the hard drive or extract to your PC, remove the update.xbe file and reburn and the game is then Evolution-X "safe".

BTW: Still no protections in MotoGP Online and Whacked!

The September 15+ games are now on the shelves... heh.

Opjose, have any sites posted this information as well that you know of? because this seems pretty serious.

None that I know of, you have to remember that the new updates only started hitting everyone yesterday or the day before... so this is not well known.

Already there was someone else here who was adversely affected by this. They didn't know what was going on.

This may be by design or a "purposeful" flaw in the was MS is doing things, but either way it screws up your Xbox. If you don't backup your C:\ partition you may be SOL.

As to if people will change the releases... why?
I'd prefer that they didn't.

If you launch the XBLive stuff from the new releases... E.G. NBA2k3, etc. and have a replacement dash, your MS dash gets nuked, period.

If you leave the MS dash in tact, your xbox merely gets the XBLive tab added and receives a new dashboard.

The next time the software is run, it knows that the update has already occured.

If you then rename things so that Evolution-X is the default dash, you'll get nuked.

HOWEVER if you use a ybox bios and leave the original dashboard alone, this does not happen.

The key is if you have a replacement dash or not and what it is called.
This has only little to do with the mod chip itself.

QUOTE ([OX] @ Oct 12 2002, 12:47 AM)
OMG, I just ordered my XBL kit yesterday and now this!  sad.gif

So I cant play any of the new XBL enabled games without removing the Evox dash? Or is it only when you go to account setup not the actual Live gaming!

On new & existing games there is a "new account" option.

If you do this, your dashboard will get the update.

Since it doesn't find the original dash, and instead sees Evolution-X, you get "nuked".

Some files other than the actual dashboard XBE file are getting affected, so even if you fix thing after this, it does no good.

If you use the ybox bioses or any that leave the original dash by it's proper name, then this doesn't happen.

If you have a flashable Mod chip you are better off using a ybox or evo bios as opposed to the stock Evolution-X bioses.

If not you either rename the dash, do the update, rename it back, then avoid ANY updates altogehter; OR you revert to the original dash totally.

Again have a backup of C:\ .

The damage can be quickly undone if you do.

OPJOSE:

So if you extract the iso to the h/d, and then remove the update.xbe, and just run it off the xbox h/d. Then the game will still work perfect?

                                    Yeap!

The update is called

update.xbe

Which unpacks a file called Xboxupdate.xbe (54 megs in size).

Note I don't know where it is located in some games yet, like NBALive.

NBA2K3 has Live support but I believe there is no update in it.

Anyway removing it causes the game to work just fine. This even works for the Xbox Live disk.
