However if you're looking to just play locally on a LAN, easiest way is to have a switch with 2 patch cables or 1 crossover

I"m not too familiar with Kai, so you'd be better off pm'ing flat235 (creator of Xlink) I would say that you probably need 2 accounts running on the different computers one on desktop the other on the laptop, but the fact you're on the same local lan may cause a problem with it, a completely different alternative is to buy the little wireless gaming adapters and connect both to the router, which i would imagine would work fine, not on XBC or Kai but just for system link
