i think most people use a router these days to connect everything if you are going online and want to also play xbox games online.

There is crossover cable which is different then regular cables you use in joinging 3 or 4 xbox's together.

i have a crossover cable i use that goes from one xbox to another xbox and it works automatically when i start system link games.

so my advice get a linksys router and the right cables and do what 99.9 of us do... and use your crossover cable for xbox to xbox gaming.

My Xbox is set up like this.  I have 2 NICS and 1 crossover.  To set the ips of the NICS, you should go to control panel, then Network Connections.  Disable both NICS, and then set their ips to automatic.  Then enable both NICs again.  I found that if you just change the ips while the NIC is enabled, it doesn't always work, but if you disable, change the ip, and enable, it works everytime.  I am also using Avalaunch and it works fine.  In your Settings>Network>IP Settings, make sure Network is enabled and DHCP is disabled.  Then set a static IP.  It can be anything.  This all works for me with no problems.

If you are trying to play online, the NIC going to your Xbox DOES NOT NEED A IP ADDRESS. Let your computer or whatever automatically set the cards IP. If you are trying to FTP then you need a IP but otherwise you dont. That was my problem a few nights ago.
