Why The Bias Against Xbc?
« on: June 02, 2004, 10:47:00 PM »

I have noticed that there seems to be a general bias against XBC on the scene. I hate to see people who bash software when the developers are working for free. This section is called Other Online Gaming Options (Gamespy, etc.) WTF? Who the hell uses Gamespy? 90% of the posts are about XBC. I have also noticed that Xlink devs and users are very cocky and are sure to let others know that XBC "sucks." I'd like to see Xlink have more than 1/3 of the total players of XBC. I'll admit, Xlink is an amazing program, but it is lacking people wise. I don't blame XBC for not wanting to associate itself with the mod scene. They have a multi  billion dollar monster breathing down thier necks and are probably afraid of MS. Xlink is very small compared to XBC. I'd (personally) like to see this section renamed to mention XBC- that's what more people use.

Yes, Xbc runs just fine for me too.
However on the same not wordpad runs just fine for me, but I still use MS Word...
Its not a case of running fine, its a case of choosing the best option which is Xlink...
Imo.

Xlink having less people than it "should" is no justification for slamming other software. Look at UnleashX. This guy created a brilliant dashboard which has loads of features. Still, many more people use Evox. He knows it but isn't bitching. The Avalanuch people are in sort of the same situation and they are very cocky (shown by thier infamous comparison page). I think it really has to do with the developers and thier attitudes on an individual basis. I think sometimes people need to remember that we all have one goal on the scene, and that having stupid little fights won't contribute to the mod scene at all.

bgrill, everything starts somewhere
xbc used to only have 12-15 people online at once, look where it is now
gamespy was the place to be till xboxgw, xbc, and a few others came out, then myself and many others just kept signing up to gamespy and spamming the hell out of the place to get a userbase for xbc, by this point the first few versions of the gui version xbc (.99a-n, release like every other day, ha) with chat had been out and more users started to join up due to the better networking code
anyway i think the reason that xlink gets it's own section is because it's open source, the people started in this community not on their own, etc

I was hoping you wouldn't quote that part  rolleyes.gif  I only put it in to try to not sound arrogent.
Yes it is my opinion, however like I said before, I have strong reasons behind why that is my decision.

Most people here aren't your common garden l33t h4l0 n00bs - they want to play different games with more mature people, in a more friendly environment - and on that score, Xlink is the only choice anyone can make..

leets can't really play on xlink. everytime i've gone on no one will play me or quit mid game. and i don't really see how you can say xlink is a 'friendly mature enviornment' compared to xbc. i personally have had more shit talk in xlink than i have in xbc. xbc is just better for halo period.

you must be the exception to the rule.... everything td said above is completely true, and I CONSTANTLY hear about how much better an attitude people have on xlink, because we are nearly void and barren of the 12 year old squads of kick happy pre pube screamers.

But, hey, do what you want smile.gif

I still dont get why they post their stats...they are meaningless... cept for the one showing how many games are being hosted, thats useful.

If XBC supported the scene up front, they'd have "more love" but they dont, so they won't. also, associating with groups that make false claims pointed at theivery isnt exactly a smart move.

I am an op and support guy in #avalaunch and #xbmc, so I get around... sure, people use xbc in many circles of the scene, but most of the devs have zero respect for them for the crap they do and say.

Karma's a bitch i guess.

Interesting behind the scenes stuff.

However as a "user" I'll go with whatever had a good convenient implementation at the moment.

When and if the behind the scenes stuff occurs most people are unaware of it.

That said I like both for varying reasons.

I do, I watch out for everyone that wants to play games with me smile.gif

I also watch out for oncoming traffic, and watch out for the mail man.

But my favorite thing to watch out for is threads with your name in them  laugh.gif

I actually agree with the original post. Ive often thought this myself, because XBC doesnt even get a MENTION in the Other Online Gaming options (gamespy etc...). But I use both XBC and XLink (well not so much atm, but when I get a headset Ill start playing RS3) and i'll just use which ever has more users on at the time.

I'm yet to experience the 12 year olds, but Im sure Ill encounter some when I get my headset.

they tend to do a bit of flaming off site and bring it here, plus they have had a very negative attitude towards the modding community.

as a result, the xbc specific forum was pulled and replaced with just an "other" tunnel forum.

because xlink is homebrew free software, and has support from dash developers, it makes more sense for us to have a forum here, specifically by name.

xbc has their own forums as well, as do we. (off site)

EDIT: Intelligent comment Psilocybe - we get our own board here because we support XS. We support homebrew dash guys who want to make UI's for Kai, we support (and will soon be supporting many more) Homebrew game / emu crews who want their stuff online. We support homebrew map makers / mod makers for games. Thats why we get a board here

[sarcasm]Xbox Live supports the scene so much it gets its own section as well[/sarcasm]

Xbox Connect really does not need to officially embrace the mod scene. I'm sure they would like to, but I guess they think the benefits would be outweighed by the disadvantages (having a multibillion dollar m$ angry). A homebrew app can be convenient, but many people find it easier to simply change rooms with a couple mouse clicks than to pull an IGR to reset the box to switch areas and then to relaunch the original game.

Also, System Mods rejects all bios modification and "illegal" bioses, but does the scene reject them? Does anyone think that everyone at System Mods is against all homebrew software simply because they have a disclaimer on thier website?

To the avalaunch devs: I'm sorry I incorrectly accused you  (by mentioning the comparison page) I had no idea. I apologize. I guess I have been noticing the users being that way and not the devs.

To the Xlink crew: I think you guys have a wonderful app, and I wish more people used it, but I find your flaming of XB Connect unjustified.
