Problem Upgrading Eeprom
« Reply #15 on: July 26, 2003, 10:37:00 AM »

I'm pretty sure I unlocked the hard drive.  Anyways, I tried replacing the hard drive with the original one I got with my Xbox, and it still didn't work.  I'm guessing that the EEPROM isn't stored on the hard drive then - maybe on some internal memory.  That seriously sucks.

Anyways, from what undead told me and my own common sense, I figured that if I boot into ConfigMagic from my Xbox, I can restore my original EEPROM.  To do this, I'll need to do a blind restore.  The directions in the readme say that the eject LED will flash Orange when ready.  However, my Xbox is already flashing red because it's set to PAL when I'm in an NTSC country.  Will ConfigMagic still make the Eject LED flash orange, or will it stay flashing red?

Your EEPROM is stored on the motherboard.

If your Xbox does not boot, then it will not load anything. BUT, if you can get it to load (not sure what you and Undead are talking about), then the LED won't be red, it will be green. Normal

The XBOX does not boot.  Period.  The Eject light flashes red, I hear the disc inside whirring, and that's it.  Just a black screen, and the Eject light flashing red.  So what now...my Xbox is gone?  Cause from what shanafan says, it's not gonna boot anything...

What I have found out is that I need to do a blind restore on my Xbox using ConfigMagic.  The blind restore lets you restore your original EEPROM if for some reason your Xbox can't load ConfigMagic.  It works by manipulating the eject light on the Xbox.  When loaded, your Eject light will be a solid Orange.  After you load your original EEPROM, it will turn green.

This I understand.  What I'm not sure of is whether the eject lights will change colors even though right now my Xbox's Eject light is already a red color (Because of the messed up EEPROM).  Can anyone confirm that the eject light will change to an orange color when ConfigMagic is booted even though the Xbox is not working and originally shows a red eject light?

well if it makes you feel better, if it wasn't for your mistake i probably wouldn't have looked into exactly how to load this nor would i have know it was a PAL eeprom and because of you I was able to do it perfectly the first time.  And like I mentioned before if you write a tutorial like "I screwed my eeprom here's how to fix it" that would be helpful too.

I don't think the problem is causing by PAL eeprom on NTSC Xbox.  As I understand, the Xbox hardware are the same for all NTSC or PAL versions, all Video & Region codes are stored in the eeprom.  Therefore, if you flash a PAL eeprom to a US purchased Xbox, your Xbox will become a PAL Xbox.  It will now output PAL video to your TV.  If your TV is a multi-system, you should still be able to view the picture normally.  However, if your TV only supports NTSC, your video output will be out of sync, but your Xbox should still work.  That is, your Xbox should still have solid green light.

I've read somewhere that a debug bios may be able to solve your problem, but you need to flash your xbox your a debug bios in the first place.  If you've a 512KB mod chip that can be flashed externally (w/o using Xbox), you can then flash it with a debug Bios and then restore your eeprom with configmagic.

This kinda makes sense in a way  smile.gif

Well currently, this is my tutorial on fixing an Xbox with a messed up EEPROM:

Step 1:  Get a new Xbox.
Congratulations!  You've fixed it!

Keep in mind it's a work-in-progress smile.gif

Hmmm...

Step 2: If you can't afford it... TRY THE WAL-MART SWAP!

Ok, i realized it's probably not the eeprom that's being PAL...it's that the EEPROM is version 1.1.  My xbox is 1.0...that's the main problem.

Where do you see what version the eeprom is?

When i tried the new eeprom i used the change on the fly feature and changed the "NTSC, Region 1" to "PAL, Region 4". But when i try starting live the xbox cant connect to live.
Any idea why this happens?
If my problem is wrong region are you willing to trade your unbanned PAL eeprom against my unbanned NTSC eeprom?

Use the PC app, Liveinfo Beta 2, to view EEPROM information and change settings easier than using on-the-fly edit in CM
