I'm going back to uni in 3 months where unfortunately i have no broadband. is it possible to sign up to xbox live just for a month? i have the xbox live menu pre-installed on my system.

Umm so when you bought the xbox you had xbl already on your dash? Doing that does nothing. when you first buy xbox live you get a full year subscribition. And you can cancel anytime!
