In my pinned tutorial on this board, it says you need to have your HD locked to use Xbox Live, since you are using Live with the modchip off and the original BIOS demands a locked HD

Because you said the "retail hard drive" you won't need to lock it because it is already locked. You can use EVOX and Live and everything fine unless you have changed the hard drive to a new unit. ALWAYS make sure you have the mod chip OFF when you play Live!
