Well I would be wagering that it probably fizzled out seeing how it's been 5 years and nothing is still active.

Yeah, bummer. I would've participated too. I wonder how close they got.

You know how in the movie "Office Space" Michael Bolton put a decimal in the wrong place....

Ya well theneoproject did the same thing, except the other way... turns out they were gonna have to also come in on Sunday.....as this would take longer than initially anticipated.
(in the order of thousands of years)

So, it would've taken thousands of years to crack the code?

Well I haven't recently done the math, but at the time it was estimated that if every computer that existed on the planet at the time were to be run 100% dedicated to cracking the 2048bit RSA, it would take well beyond our lifespan before we brute forced the private key.  Of course this didn't take into account increases in processing ability, more computers etc...  Other ways of shortcutting the decryption were found that made the neoproject pointless as it used a fairly archaic way of deciphering( it basically just created a key and tried it, then moved onto the next one and tried that....etc).  Instead of rewriting the decryption code, there were greater advances made in modchips and softmods that made this an unnecessary endeavour.

Screw that, it would probably be easier to hack into IBM's supercomputer and have IT crack the code.

Lets get started on that project. Any takers?

lol  jkjk

but really, too bad this fizzled. Home PCs are a lot more spunky on average and commonly have dual core processors and such. Maybe it would only take 500 years instead  wink.gif

Hmmmmm...or maybe not - at least not using brute force searching. smile.gif
