To play on Xbox Live, you have to install Live and use Live with the modchip always off. This is done by installing a switch or using mode 3 with the Matrix. If you upgraded to a bigger HD, that has to be locked.

Since the modchip is off, only original games will work. Backups won't.

Alternatives to Xbox Live is XBConnect and Gamespy. They allowed modded Xboxes online with their servers.
