what if i acquire an original untouched, un modded xbox HD around, and install it in a chipped xbox with a disable switch?

if i boot to that HD with the mod turned off, i should have a "virgin" xbox again, right (locked HD, original xboxdash.xbe)?

or is each HD coded to the motherboard its installed in? i know the HD gives out an unlock code on boot or whatever, but will the motherboard know it's not the HD that CAME with the xbox itself?

okaay... i'm getting closer....

what if:

i had a 80 gig drive installed, post mod, but still have my ORIGINAL hd sitting on my desk.

i screwed up the contents of that drive, but am able to restore the "virgin" contents from backup.

if i restore the data to how it was, and disable my mod chip with a switch, i *should* be able to *at least* reach the "original" xboxdash.xbe with my mod switched off, right?

i'd need to remove my new drive (or at least disconnect it), and have my mod "turned off"... but wouldn't i technically be back to square one?

(this post is making no assumptions about getting online... i'm just taking baby steps at this point...)

oh...

and the way i'd *restore* my old hd would be:

put my old HD in the xbox, switch on the mod, boot to an EvoX cd-rw, ftp to the box from my PC, replace the screwed up data with my "original HD backup", shut down, turn off the mod switch, boot back up....

at that point it *should* boot to the original xboxdash.xbe, off the original HD..... right?
