wink.gif [ that is why we are all here - right ] .
If you wish to go and buy another Xbox to play Live then I think that is great and I am sure that you will get your money's worth after playing LIVE for a while . Besides there are some very cool multiplayer games that are fun as hell when you have 2 units connected [ with 2 screens ] .
Remember here that even if you have a switch on your box you still have to buy the retail LIVE games to play so it is time to pay-up for what we owe M$ .
Now the server issue is another story altogether ... sad.gif .

I hardly think you could consider MS bad for what they have done, it is after all better for all their legitimate customers. One would have to hope that if it does reduce overall piracy - that the increased revenue has an inverse relationship to the future price of games too.
Realistically we all have to start living with the fact that you have to use original games on Live.
Again, I'll say this...MS does not have to go to any particularly great lengths to make the system unhackable. That's right cannot be hacked. If you don't believe me, PM me, and I can explain some simple encryption/security principles.
For the above to work MS needs to rely on the serial numbers being correct. Any serial numbers which MS suspected as being suspect will also fail to connect...MS is simply getting in touch with these people and determining if their box is in a legitimate state. If MS is in doubt the person will be told to send their xbox in for "repair".
So what's going to happen to the "hackers" changing their serial numbers - since the serial number is so essential - these people will be identified and their accounts suspended. I recon we'll start to see this in the next couple of weeks - needless to say people will deny it until the bitter inevitability of it sinks in.
I think quite a few people are going to be very surprised by how resourceful MS has been in relation to XBox Live. Credit where credit is due, MS have implemented a decent security system on a console - and you guys are going to have to buy legit games.

99% chance of hacks or workarounds after people find out what XBL is checking for when it connects.  XBL is a scam anyways, still no prices announced for next year, and you have to PAY additionally to download content for games are you PAY for XBL... I don't want to pay for a game, pay for XBL, then pay again for extra content for the game.  Booster packs and stuff should be free.

Zildjian:
What do you base information on?
Based on a degree in mathematics, another in computer science, a job where I encounter computer security each day, and constant interaction with large software company...I can safely say you are wrong... either that or your basic grasp of basic math is wrong and you meant 1%

No. Not true.
MS can send a block of code to your machine to be ran prior to the game session being accepted. This code can use the serial number of your box (already sent) and a CRC/hash of the BIOS (plus whatever else) to create a unique response which the server is expecting. Think about this - don't post an immediate response! No...think really hard!
As for serial numbers - that either relies on a keychecker of some kind - algo usually quite easy to determine, and legit users could have keys posted everywhere etc.
Far from it past history has shown this to be not to work at all.

PillMonster:

Education is hardly a basis for your argument;  I've gotten a degree in computer engineering and am working on my master's degree, so does that make me any more correct?  Apparently so by your argument, lol.

Thus far they are apparently checking the BIOS to see if they are original or not, and I'm sure once someone finds exactly how they check it there will be a work around.  If they check for original media, I'm sure there will be patches for games as well.  I may be wrong, but my X-mas I bet modded players will be playing on xbox live.  Remember how both Office XP and Windows XP were suppose to be hacker proof.... and how much Win XP SP1 was hyped up as blocking all the hackers?  The harder something is to figure out the more determined people will be to do it.

You people are crazy getting new boxes because of this. Let's see $50 on a XBL starter kit or thousands of $'s paying for games with a modded system. I don't know, but you do the math. You will be just feeding there pokects by buying thoses games. HELLO!!!!!!!!!!

yeah but if you get a new xbox you will be able to play on live and use your old xbox for backups... which you shouldnt be doing any.

QUOTE
When is the last time you saw some technoligical marvel come out of socialistic France?

1914, when a brazilian made the first airplane to get off on its own and go around the Eiffel Tower, without the need of a catapult. Or perhaps you may want when USSR made the first artificial satellite, sent the first man into space, made the first space station that last a long time (Skylab? That was a joke!), and all this without computers, but using rudimentar calculators.

Or maybe you'd like that most people working on the OS division on MS are from India, not US. That mos people getting a PhD on the US are foreigners that either will return to their home with knowledge or get the jog an american would have, but won't because someone more qualified fits better.

The system is to change. The recession is a mere sign of it. Mark these words.

By the way, it's just ironic your statement, as the independance war on the US was won just because the french help arrived. Funny, isn't it?  jester.gif

USSR is no more.

Foreigners come to the US for school and jobs, they may return to India, but look at the state India is in.

Recessions come in cycles....there will always be ups and downs.

That was centuries ago, the French forgot how to fight since then...hehehe look what happened with the Nazi's.

key codes work very well when used correctly. Take blizzard games for instance. To play Starcraft online you have to have a VALID cd key, even generators wont work when trying to get online. Blizzard keeds up with which ones have been sold and if there are any floating around the net they simply blacklist them, only one person suffers, the 100's that were using the key illegally are out of luck. maybe m$ does do this by adding a unique file once live is first laoded. So unique , up to date key codes are very effiecent
