The Good And The Bad

I spent quite a bit of time trying to find out what the heck was going on.

There are -TWO- levels of problems.

1 - The "can't connect" connectivity issue.

I still have no idea why this happens, but it seems to definitely be a Kerberos problem.

If you go into the Xblive control panel and try the connectivity test, you SHOULD see all the icons appear with no RED ICON.

If you get a single red icon at the bottom, you have the connectivity problem.

I have been unable to get past this on afflicted machines with or without mod chips installed.

2 - The actual game play issue if connectivity test is ok.

If you have connectivity and try to fire up, say MOTOGP Online from the retail disk, the very first time you launch it you WILL be connected (mod chip or no mod chip) and you will be notified that an update is required.

The update downloads some new code to your Xbox which adjusts the connection servers for the game you are trying to launch.

In all cases, mod chip or no, kerberos authentication does occur.

-AND- (drum role please) the downloaded code -DOES INDEED- detect mod chips!

Once the download has occurred you can SWITCH OFF the mod chip and revert back to the OEM BIOS. It doesn't matter if the chip was on or off during the update though.

IF YOU DO, XBLive does work fine on your modded machine, EVEN if you have replaced the console with Evolution-X!

So, yes, I'm eating it a bit on this one. The downloaded "checker" code was new to me until I had a chance to see it in action.

The working modded (switched) xboxes have replacement locked drives, btw.

And this, ladies and gentleman, is why the Sony PS2 is doing so much better than the xbox... MS is a corporate powerhouse that people don't trust FOR A REASON.  Sony would never pull shit like this.

And I must add, this is really messed up, Xbox live users are paying to use xbox live, and they pull this crap.

Some people seem to be confused about the Y button screen. THere are two that we are refering to.  The y screen in the Xbox live set of menues that shows network information.  The other Y screen is from "tech" support.  I was told that you could go to Settings->system Info-> and then press Y.  This would tell you to enter a 4 digit code to reset the Xbox to factory settings, including wiping out the saved games and patches.  When I got home and tried it, nothing happened. SO I assume that the tech was mistaken about this code.  I believe that XBOB Live was refering to the system reset Y screen and not the net info Y screen.

Dude, why the hell do you and so many other people keep saying "Bill Gates"?  Like he would have anything to do with the xbox division of MS, he's not even the CEO of MS...

I'm not sure if you realize this, but XBL is a PAY service, meaning you pay to play games online.  Not all people who have modchips PIRATE the games.  So people just paid for a year long service that they can't use, even if they don't pirate and just want to run linux or region free progressive scan dvd... and that seems right to you?  If you didn't have to pay for xbox live, it wouldn't be that big of an issue...

Edit- I don't even have XBL or plan on getting it, I think its a waste to pay to play online for a game you already paid for, but its still messed up what theyr'e doing.

Well this proves that some tech support people are clueless: From a few minutes ago.

Question: Are you blocking people with mod chips from Xbox live? Even if they are running retail games?

I know 99% of modchip users pirate games, but it still sucks for the minority, or the pirater who buys a game to play on XBL, when he paid for both the game and to play on XBL.

And I know Bill Gates is the figurehead of MS, but its like saying Norio Ohga (CEO of Sony) is to blame for PS2 antipiracy.

Sorry

They did not metion anything to me about a code (i found this out by reading this forum) I tell u what.

If this is not sorted MS will be getting £150 of me come the 25th for a new Xbox.

Coz i need Xbox live dude, and it looks like all these mod chips have proper fucked up coz they will not be worth SH!T as u cant play them on Xbox live.

It would not suprice me if MS had been testing the chips since they came out and thinking ways of screwing it up.

Basicaly look at it like this, Sony dont have a HD so they would not be able to screw with it as they is no where to add the new update.

But seeing as MS can see the sh!t on ur box ur Fu@ked!!!

Like i said i will go and see if i can remember how to do the y thing

if u need me MSN me on [email protected] pease out dudes

Ok, with this Y thing in the System Info screen...

Is is something else if Y doesn't work?

I tried it on my Xbox (modded with X-ecuter), nothing.

My friend with an unmodded box came back today and I got him to try it, nothing.

So who wants to call these so called techies back that told them they had a modded system because Y didn't work now? :/

This code is under the sys info screen. You press Y and it asks you for the code. Its 4 keypresses long and supposedly completey restores the system. - Derfel

well i been busted. someone try to go to the system info screen and hit y and see if it works?? mine wouldnt do it and he said really?? i said yeah and he said oohhhhhh. i said oh what he said why didnt you save me the hour and a half i just spent trying to fix your xbox and tell me you had it modded. - Xbox Live

According to these guys you hit Y in the System Info screen and stuff pops up.  Xbox Live even said the guy on the phone said a modded system can't do the Y thing.  My friends Xbox is not modded and he can't do it.

So what's up with that?
