Any thoughts as to why mine isnt working?

I got all the info from my cpu (IP, DNS, etc.) except for the MAC settings.  I saw someone's old post on a different forum saying that I need the MAC settings (this person has the same provider as me).  I cant get in contact with him, but does anyone know how I can get the MAC within windows xp?  It doenst come up when i type "ipconfig/all" in msdos.

The MAC address is a hardware address programmed into the network card.  It's not something you'd change.

I tried setting it past nov 15th, and it didnt work. It was a funny attempt.

I dont have ME, i got XP.

And about the MAC address- i still cant find it.  The guy said for our provider that we needed the MAC- so i might as well give it a try

The MAC address is an unique number for every network device, so there's no sense on saying things as "changing the XBox MAC address to enter Live", it's kinda serial code over the network. There's a hack to change the MAC address, but it has nothing to do with being able or not to get on Live. Also, the hack (along with the serial number hack) is supposed to allow an user to enter annonymously on Live, but so far none can enter Live whithout acutally signing up, which means sending your name, address and credit card number. Yeah, annonymously   rotfl.gif ...

Hey teetu, how are you connecting to Live? With a router, ICS, or straight connection to your cable modem?

You beat me to it! Yep, "physical address" is the MAC - the network adaptor's semi-unique serial number.

As for the folks who wonder why you would want to change your MAC, well here's why:

Some ISPs marry your account to a single MAC so that ONLY that MAC may access the Internet. This is either out of a misguided attempt to provide security or an equally stupid and misguided attempt to ensure that the user isn't using a single ISP account to offer Internet access to multiple clients via a hub.

The end result is that if your ISP account is married to your desktop computer, your ISP WILL NOT ALLOW your Xbox to access the Internet UNLESS you change its MAC to match that of your desktop.

A better way to solve this is to invest in an inexpensive broadband router (Linksys is my favorite supplier, check out the BEFSR41 4-port switch/router), change its MAC to that of your desktop, and then plug all of your computers, including your Xbox, into the router. Your ISP will only ever see the router, and will be fooled into thinking that you have only a single client connected.

This works well especially for those ISP that charge a fee per host, like my old one did. ($15 for each addl. host... ouch!)

I think the wait till the 15th isnt true- MS employees are saying it but seems everyone is getting on.

Xevious- are there any cheaper routers?  I just need one that has two connections- one for my cpu and xbox

You could put a second network card in your computer, connect your Xbox to the second card, and configure your computer to be an Internet gateway, which is easy to do in XP. NICs can be had for $15 or so, especially since all you need is a 10Mbit card.

PM me if you need more info...
