Desperately Need Help With Hardware Failure
« on: May 08, 2004, 04:12:00 AM »

ok, after some investigation I have come to the conclusion that the eeprom on the motherboard has become damaged ( how could this happen anyway? ) and following this link http://arisme.free.fr/Xbox/Reflash/ seems to explain how to reflash the eeprom using a mod chip and cromwell bios. I need an eeprom image first though, and have my own xbox here, as well as 2 good mod chips, but how do I get the eeprom image from my motherboard to my pc/modchip?

any help appreciated.

Guys, I could really use some help here if anyone has carried out this procedure. I now have the eeprom.bin from my xbox, I got it by backing up in evox then ftping the file from c:/backup to my pc. I have it in the same directory as the Cromwell-patched.bin file and the addEeprom.exe both downloaded from the above link. When I run the addEprom.exe it does nothing, just flashes a black box quickly but it doesn't alter the cromwell-patched.bin.

I'm going around in circles here guys, please point me in the right direction

if your xbox is flashing red the eeprom image is hosed on the chip, if your hard drive was locked, its now a paperweight since the password was stored on the eeprom ( unless you have a backup eeprom.bin that you saved from the xbox before it died)

anyways, the xbox has to be a 1.3 or less for cromwell patched file to work. you can get a new eeprom in the buy/sell section but like i said if your hard drive was locked by your old eeprom the new one will have a diff passy and wont be able to unlock it.

You can also use xecuter 4981 bios , load it into a program called xbtool and then load an eeprom to be embedded in your bios, throw that on a modchip and the xbox will boot! even though the eeprom is still hosed, after it boots you can use config magic to restore the eeprom.

remember 1.0 xbox's need 1.0 eeproms.   1.1 to 1.5 xbox's can use any eeprom version except 1.0

edit: oops i missed where you said you had the eeprom backup, the cromwell patched file has to be run from a dos prompt theres a readme file in there that tells you exactly what you have to type in dos to add the eeprom its something like

addeeprom cromwell-patched.bin eeprom.bin

make sure the cromwell-patched.bin and your eeprom.bin are in the same folder as the addeeprom.exe then just use  dos prompt or "command prompt"

if you dont know how to use dos,  take the line i posted that your supposed to type, open notepad and paste it to the first line, then save the note pad file but save it as  patch.bat

then move the patch.bat into the folder where you have addeeprom.exe cromwell-patched.bin and eeprom.bin and just click on the patch.bat and it should patch your eeprom to the cromwell-patched.bin file, then just use that on your modchip.

Thanks for the help m8, you've answered a few questions for me, but posed a few others too! unsure.gif

Ok, firstly, my xbox is a v1.0 so I won't be able to use the eeprom image, if I borrow another xbox bought recently I assume I'll be able to use that eeprom image?

The thing about the hard drive, I can't remember if I locked this one or not when installing, I'll be able to tell easy enough though by trying it in my box ( I assume thats how it works ). If I have locked it is there no way I can use this hard disc again? or do you mean I won't be able to save what's on there? Can't I connect it to my pc and reformat it or something to lose the hard disc lock? Obviously I don't want to lose this 2 month old 120gig samsung drive for the sake of a hard disc unlocking key. Is here no way to find out the key from the hard disc rather than from the eeprom?

Also you say the patched cromwell bios only works on v1.3 on older, if this is the case does this mean there is no way I can save this motherboard?

I think i've asked enough questions ( for now  wink.gif

thanks again for the help

What happens if you connect a locked HD to your pc as a slave then use the HD manufacturers HD utility to do a low level format?

You can forget about saving the hard drive,

There are mixed feelings about retrieving a passy using live info,

but live info uses the eeprom in its equation to come up with the passy,  so just loading it and picking the hard drive isnt going to get you the "right" password without having the eeprom.

Dont even bother with the hard drive anymore if the original eeprom that belonged to it is gone, throw it away, spend the $12 or $15 in the buy sell section to get a new unlocked HD along with another $5 for a good eeprom .

if the xbox is higher than a 1.3,  then use xbtool,  and embed the eeprom into xecuter 4981 bios (modchip required)

Help Getting Config Magic To Switch Version, Input eeprom.bin != Flashed eeprom.bin

Yip, tried this, I have a printout of that whole post right in front of me.

I understand the principle of whats happening, flashing a corrupted image to let config magic restore it properly, eepromer dosn;t have any success in writing a new image, just does nothing. I think the eeprom is dead.

QUOTE
This sounds right on the money, why then does liveInfo advertise itself as a HDD unlocker without needing a password or eeprom?
The guy who started this rumour made a goof from what I understand.  On his success he failed to realize that live info had automatically loaded his correct eeprom (since he had worked with it in the program when he ran it previously) So he was a tad eager to announce.

Ok guys, thanks for the help so far. So the 2 month old Samsung drive is shagged, what do you think the chances of passing this off as a faulty drive and getting it replaced?

Now back to fixing this xbox, from what I understand this is what I have to do;

1, fit an unlocked HD to shagged box
2, get hold of another m8's newish box, backup his eeprom and ftp it to my pc
3, use xbtool to embed this eeprom in a 4981 bios.
4, write this bios file along with a padding file to a cdrw/dvd-rw
5, flash my 2.3b lite with this bios
6, install my 2.3b in shagged xbox
7, boot up and use config magic to flash the eeprom with the image contained in the bios
8, install evox or whatever to new HD.

Is my above understanding correct?

cheers guys
